Definition of Finish

I was reading a thread on the "Finish" of cigars that confused me. It seems that people interchange the last 3rd of a cigar with the lingering taste that a cigar leaves in your mouth. I did a little searching and it seems that this interchange is consistant through out CS.

I was under the impression that "Finish" was the lingering taste not necessarily the last 3rd of a cigar. What is your definition?

Re: Definition of Finish

I've noticed two meanings for finish. One is the length of time the flavor remains on the palate after exhaling the smoke. This is the same way wine tasters will use the term. The second meaning is how long after finishing the cigar you have that "I smoked a cigar today" feeling. This sense is more an indication of the amount of nicotine you've absorbed.

Re: Definition of Finish

I think the difference lies in the form of the word. When used as a verb, finish refers to the last portion of a cigar before putting it out, as in "this cigar finished strong with thick smoke." When used as a noun, it refers to the taste/effect left after the cigar has been put to rest, as in "this cigar had a light and toasty finish that stayed with me the rest of the night." Least that's the way I sees it.

Re: Definition of Finish

I define it as what is left after I am done smoking the cigar. I see "finish" as a definitive part of the smoking experience and not, something that ocurrs along with everything else while I am smoking it.

This is how I define finish, too. I really don't like having that lingering taste in my mouth after I'm done with a stick. Especially when I've smoked in the evening and keep waking up through the night with that terrible taste in my mouth.

Re: Definition of Finish

I refer to finish as to how the smoke affects my pallet.

For exmaple i may refer to a cigar having a heavy finish if it really laid heavily in my mouth. I may refer to finish as a sharp if the flavor kind of spikes then goes away really fast.

So for me, its all about how the smoke feels on my pallet, not so much the flavor. I know, my system is confusing, but i understand it

Re: Definition of Finish

Its either a place in Scandinavia or when your lips catch fire.

I guess I would consider it to be the aftertaste left in your mouth after you take a draw on the cigar.

Re: Definition of Finish

I always understood it as the taste it had AFTER the smoke was finished.

Re: Definition of Finish

I agree that finish is really contextual. I define it both as the last bit of a smoke before extinguishing, as well as the taste that lingers on the palate for hours. Often times, those two tastes are one in the same, unless it was really bitter or harsh in the first 2/3, in which case that flavor becomes the finishing flavor in terms of lasting on the palate, given its pronounced flavor, even if it mellowed out for the finish. Follow? We should really use two different terminologies for the separate entities.

Re: Definition of Finish

I would define finish as after each puff. I call the lingering flavor once the cigar is done as memory. I am probably the only person that calls it this but it is my world.

Re: Definition of Finish

After you exhale.

Long finish - The flavors continue/change and slowly dissipate.

Short finish - The flavors quickly go away.

It's easier to smoke a long finish cigar more slowly for me than a short finish. Doesn't make one better than the other.

But that's just my opinion and I could be wrong.
