Hi everybody,
Again I just want to say THANKS for all the welcome posts.. I feel like a found a bunch of old Army buddies... this is GREAT. OK... as a Green Pea to both Cigars and this club, how about helping me and maybe some other new users out by explaining some of the terms in here... like HERF??? Now, I know what a Hefer is... standard grazing stock here in Wisconsin, and can be seen in way to tight of clothing during summerfest.. but what he heck is a HERF?? Also please feel free to share any other terms I may run across. Also... being so new to cigars I squeak when I walk.. I currently am still trying to find a reasonably priced every day smoke. Have an hour driver to / from work each way.. that's SIX DAYS A WEEK. Currenly have a 500 count class topped humidor I bought from Thompsons almost 2 years ago. In it I have some Te-Amos Perdomo ISOMS Bolivar Fuertas " I LOVE THOSE but cost to much for every day use" some Habano Primeros and some La Rosa Especials. I like the Lonsdale size.. 6-61/2 x 44 ring.. and Robusto sizes. Now.. I am an every day working stiff.. so I cannot convince my wife that a 80.00 box of cigars is more important than paying the light bill.. SO any suggestions would help. I can usually get by with about 40.00 a month on a box. Thanks again for the warm welcome Mikey ![]()

JR has a bunch of bundles that may well fill in for everyday smokes or you may even consider Padron as a reasonably priced line. I do want to warn you to stay away from the slippery slope...NEVER and I do repeat NEVER dabble with the isom's (Island South Of Miami) because if you do it won't be long before you have forgotten about the light bill entirely and are reading the paper to the blue flame of your lighter!

everyday smoke...
I would reccomend the Mayorga Robusto Maduro... excellent for an everyday (in my case 3x a day) smoke... They are only $40.95 from JR for a box of 20... I would also warn you of the ISOM's... if you see them, RUN!!!... it is a very slippery slope and I am well on my way down...

Welcome!
Also from JR's are the Belinda Blacks and Maria Mancinis @ about 40 a box, both fairly full flavored.

You can also try Uncle Mikey, he has great bundles at great prices. And you also might want to get a bundle of Connie #9 maddies(robustos) from JR's or the #73 maddies(toros), these are also very inexpensive and are usallay good quality. Although I will warn you with the Connies, it can be hit or miss on occasion, and they can use a few months nap time, but when they are on, they are great smokes.

A "herf" is a gathering of cigar lovers, for the purpose of burning many, many cigars. Sometimes the term is also used to refer to the smoker. So a bunch of herfs might get together for a herf. I can't remember how the term came about. Not sure I ever really found a definitive explanation.
The Lowland Gorilla represents the no snob attitude which members of ClubStogie are expected to maintain. Unlike other boards you may visit on the net, CS members don't give newbies a lot of grief when they ask questions. Typically, the gorillas just give the answer. When LLGs (Lowland Gorillas) disagree, they do so as gentle apes. No flame wars or other ugliness. We respect each other's rights to our own opinions (no matter how lame ).Hope that helps. It would be great if ClubStogie had a frequently asked questions (FAQ) area, but, usually the LLGs don't mind answering. Just keep asking. And once again, welcome to the jungle. |

Just think.. all of you will some day turn me into a HERF MASTER I usually smoke about three cigars a day.. the hour drive both ways is a great time. Belinda is a wonderful brand.. the Belinda Black is awsome in my opinion.. but then again... when my cigar allowance is done for the week.. I wrap cigarettes in rolled up paper bags to look cool! I promise I won't tell anybodies wives that I get by with $40.00 a month.. have them call me and I will say that was $40.00 an hour OK take care and thanks again all you LLG's... this jungle rocks. a copy of one of the last connie charts I've seen can be found here, although without links to saka's comments...
http://m-a-t.com/cigars/connie.html I believe credit goes to Jim the Newbie for keeping that (site, not the chart) up, but I may be mistaken. As for 'herf' a lot of mystery surrounds this term. My limited understanding is that it came from ASC. Here's the explanation given by a gentleman I've never met named John Chunko posted to ASC years ago attributing the origin of the word to a "Prince of Skeeves", who made only a dozen or so posts but whose shared the word with us on November 21, 1996 and launched it into public use... HERF - EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The un-official word of ASC is Herf. Herf is a unique part of speech. It can be correctly used as a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, an infinitive, a prefix, a suffix and an explicative. The arcane word "herf" first entered the ASC lexicon on November 21, 1996, and was quickly elevated to frenetic and common use by ASCers. The Prince of Skeeves exposed ASC to the word herf in a casual posting to the group... however it was ASCers, as a budding collective, who took the word and made it divine. Herf is now virulently spreading to worldwide common use as hip cigar parlance. HERF - CHRONOLOGY: As for the origin of Herf, here's the History of Herf The word "herf" first appeared on ASC... ********************************************* Subject: worst cigars IMHO From: aloysius@gte&% (Prince of Skeeves) 1996/11/21 Newsgroups: alt.smokers.cigars I bought a Canaria d'Oro(sic?)Robusto out of curiousity and it was really a horrible, stale, grassy smoke with a peed-on taste. I gave it about 2 inches before I put it out. Also, anything Macanudo...I tried several when I first began smoking cigars and found them all to be very bland and almost impossible to herf, they were so tightly wrapped. I think the list of `Mediocre Smokes' for most folks would be huge. ********************************************* And, the voices of ASCers cry out immediately... saying, "what is this_herf_ thing?" In answer... on November 23, Prince of Skeeves elucidates, "To `herf' is to draw on a cigar." The voices of ASC follow in chorus: "this herf thing... it is good" And, in a grand gesture, full grace is shared... Subject: an early definition of the word... From: aloysius@gte&%(Prince of Skeeves) 1997/07/11 Newsgroups: alt.smokers.cigars EVERYONE MUST HERF The first time I heard the word `herf' and recognized it's potential for the enrichment of my vocabulary was in junior college in Clyde, Texas in 1982 from a blueblood derelict friend of my named Stu. In the context of the time it was used to describe the ungainly and humorous facial contortion required to deeply draw on a large, hand-rolled cigarette of unknown filling while driving a motor vehicle and keeping an eye peeled for the Callahan County sheriff. Later I found the term `herf' described nicely the method for getting a good mouthful of tasty smoke from my favorite cigars.(Padron and HDM Rothschilds) S. delaVega Prince of Skeeves -------- [end quoted post] ---------------------------------- HERF LEVITY: Herf... a word which is now spreading to virtually all corners of the cigar world... thanks to the likes of the many and varied distinguished herfing enthusiasts (herfnicks)... such as: the good Dr. Miguelit (used on his many national radio interviews), Mr. Lew Rothman (used proudly and prominently on JR's Winter catalog issue's front cover), ASC elder Mr. Bob Curtis (used liberally all over the ICG website), the Hon. Steven Saka (used strategically at least four times in the course of the 1997 New Hampshire state senatorial debate and once as an invective following the debate's broadcast, which, btw, was televised on CSPAN-3 to over a half-billion viewers worldwide, including the space shuttle mission crew), Connie Whittager, perky weatherwoman on Montgomery, Alabama's WKKG-TV (used to describe the fog which paralyzed suburban roadways for two straight days in April 1997... in an interview on the Weather Channel, she explained, "...motorists were advised to avoid the western beltway and all lakeside arteries due to a stationary fog bank thicker than a hundred hounddogs herfin' Hondurans in a hayloft", and by Jorge Jesus Delgado, Jr., now departed, (who ardently pleaded to "herf a cigar" before his execution in the Texas death-house in October 1997)... ...just to mention a few of the notables! PS: Remember... November 21 is World Herfing Day!!! Sorry you asked, huh?

You also might want to check out L.Lynn cigars. Good prices on regular and bundled lines.
I agree with Treyjo43, Uncle Mikey's is definitely worth a gander. You could put together a sampler of his bundled brands for pretty cheap. Among JR's bundle deals are the Hoyo de Monterry silver bundles priced from $35 to $45 (Majestic 6.12 x 44, Exquisito, Executives). Apparently these are the same as boxed Hoyos but in cheaper packaging. |

That takes some researching! WHEW!
OR are you a master herfmeister in disguise, just walking around brimming over with information. Either way, that's very impressive . . . Oh, and BTW, it was great herfin' with you Friday night in Baltimore!! MoTheMan
