It isn't the idiots in government soley responsible, at least not in this country. These idiots get their notions from their constituents, who in turn let their elected officials know what their wishes are. Usually constituents are comprised of organized groups of extremists that get these types of issues pushed to the forefront. If only they would focus on issues that really matter, maybe then would elected officials do something of significance.
