Saw something weird at work

The other day at work a patient came in with an unlit cigar in his mouth. So naturally I commented that I don't see many people with cigars and tried to strike up a conversation. While the patient was in the process of purchasing his prescription he told me that he doesn't smoke at all he just likes to chew on cigars and that he bought a box of the particular cigar he had in his mouth for like $4 a cigar. That just made me wonder if anyone else does this? Wouldn't getting chewing tobacco be cheaper?

My friend's dad did this after the doctor told him he could no longer smoke them.

Re: Saw something weird at work

Had an uncle that loved to chew cigars. As time went on they got shorter and shorter. Finally the stick would dissappear and his cheek would look like a second baseman's.

I guess that is a smart idea. I don't see many cigar smokers at all so I didn't know if this was a usual practice or not.

Re: Saw something weird at work

i work in a humidor and i've noticed that there are probably a handfull of guys that do this. most the guys that do are older and probably can't smoke cigars any more. i've also noticed that the guys that just chew on them go through them pretty quickly. you can still get a nicotine buzz from chewing on the cigar but alot less than smoking it.

Chew is pretty bad. chewing a cigar is a lot safer i would say. chew has fiber glass in it to cut the mouth and get nicotine into faster.

Re: Saw something weird at work

i've seen people do this on the golf course.... again it's been my experience that it's mostly older folks, or people who are not able to smoke them any more for health reasons.

is that true about the fiberglass? i'd never heard that before. seems to me that if it had fiberglass to cut your mouth, that it'd also cut up your esophagus and such.

Re: Saw something weird at work

When I was a kid, one of the neighborhood dads always had a cigar clamped in his mouth. Sometimes lit, sometimes not, but never without. If I recall correctly, most of the time it was unlit.

He liked to work on cars. He used to bend over to adjust the air/fuel mix on his carb with one burning, with the air filter off. We waited in vain for the explosion.

Re: Saw something weird at work

I used to chew, and I really enjoyed it, but quit because it was reeking havoc on my gums. If I had to chew cigars, I'd rather chew some chewing tobacco again.

That is what i have heard. it is microscopic(sp?) pieces though. just enough to minorly(that a word) cut your gums. with all that is put into ciggs would you really be shocked?

EDIT: I'll look it up when i get a chance and make sure i am correct on it.

Noticed that once at a conference I attended. One guy had a cigar in his mouth at all times for the whole week. If smoking was allowed then it was lit, otherwise he chewed on it.

Re: Saw something weird at work

I did a google search and found this in the Urban Dictionary

[q]smokeless tobacco, mostly used down south and in the mid west. you will see most farmers, cowboys, rednecks, and hicks with one in. it goes between your bottom, cheek, and sometimes top lip between your gums. it contains fiber glass in some instances and is very good tasting depending on what flavor you get. Goes good after playing with your girls happy lips.[/q]

I not the only one to have heard this, so it might very well be true. while it might not be fiber glass, it does contain other thing ment to cut the gums and get the nicotine into you.

Why waste the money on chewing on cigars? Chew on the cheap stuff, I guess...

I think you are getting dip and chew confused. Chew (Redman, Beechnut, Taylor's Pride, etc) does not have any fiberglass in it, the leaves are long and broad and you chew on it (like gum). It's much juicier and makes your spit a lot thicker than dip. Most people put dip between their bottom lip (some do top lip) and gum, but you don't actually chew on anything, you just squeeze the juice out of the tobacco using your lip and gum. Some brands of dip (also called snuff when shredded very finely) have fiberglass particles in it that "shred" your lip to deliver the nicotine to your bloodstream more efficiently. In my experience, Kodiak contains the most fiberglass because my lip always feels like I rubbed against a cheese grater when I spit it out. I dip Copenhagen snuff and I don't notice that feeling, so if Cope does have any fiberglass in it, it's a lot less than Kodiak or Skoal.
