Re: Carlito's Way arrived

Got mine this week and Holt's now has a customer for life.

One of my Opus X had a tear in the cello and the wrapper as well. I sent an e-mail, Holt's is sending a replacement with a pre-paid label to send back the damaged stick.

That is great customer service. It's not if $hit happens (because it always does) it's how you deal with it.

Now, I don't know how I'll bring myself to smoke these beauties!

Mine came yesterday as well, and I am happy with every aspect...speed, packaging, etc. Even came in a nice Holt's gift box.

Re: Carlito's Way arrived

Gave in and ordered this afternoon. Which of these would you say is the strongest? I've got a friend who loves them just as strong as he can get them and I think one of these would make a nice gift.

This stuff looked more like sap, as I could not wipe it off with a lint-free towel (I know it is not plume). I decided to put it back into the cellophane without the wrap.
A few things, in no particular order. Info on the Cameroon Shark, including info on the Carlito's Way samplers in terms of quantity.

What you're likely seeing on the cigar is sap from the cedar; it means that the cedar was not cured properly (they heat/dry it in a kiln). It won't harm the cigar, or affect the taste. A number of people have also seen this on the first production of King Bs.

As for the mold issue you've seen with some Anejos, the aged maduro wrapper that they use can be more susceptible to mold than most wrappers. As such, I usually store these at the top of my humidor, where it is driest. I haven't had an issue, but often what can happen is vendors store their cigars very wet, and by the time you take 'em home, the spores may have already taken root.

For what it's worth, I do not remove the cello or cedar wrap from any of the cigars that I get; I leave them intact in the original packaging. I do keep my humidors humidity and temperature controlled, at 65% or lower. Putting the Anejos at the top of the humidor ensures that they will be in the low 60's in terms of humidity, which is more than enough.

Agreed, without a doubt, this is the best value in a sampler I have ever seen, from any vendor. The Cameroon Shark is a beautiful rarity, and the rest of the cigars are as well. $50 for all of this is seriously a gift.

The Opus X xXx would be the strongest (the short pyramid).

Thanks for the response moki. I figured it was just sap from the cedar. I have also heard (can't remember where) that the tobacco used for the opusX wrapper is generally more oily than most wrappers. I have definitely seen this with the opusX in my humidors (in the past I removed the cello, now I am keeping it on for this reason).

As for the anejos, when I have found ones with some mold, it has always been under the cedar wrap and not on the upper portion of the cigar. I have always figured that moisture gets trapped under the cedar wrap and since this wrapper is more susceptible to mold, you start to get growth. I was once gifted an anejo and the person had kept it right next to the humidifier in his humidor and it had a considerable amount of growth under the cedar. Since then, I just remove the wrap and have not had any major problems, even storing them closer to 70% RH. It is kind of a pain to remove the cedar wraps, but so far it seems to work for me.

Thanks again for the info, I will definitely keep what you said in mind. When I finally get a cooler, I will keep the anejos closer to the top.
