Spice and Nicotine content correlation?
Is there a correlation between the amount of Zing or spice and the amount of nicotine in a cigar? To clarify, when smoking some sorts of maduros there is very little spice however when smoking some there is quite a lot. After smoking one such cigar with a lot of spice or zing (which was rather good too) I noticed that I got more of a buzz than usual, which at this point is usually not at all.
Your thoughts and experienced opinions are quite appreciated.

Other more muted spicy flavors are specific to the tobacco, and not necessarily nicotine-bourne. |

Re: Spice and Nicotine content correlation?
When reading a review, people often talk about tasting "spice" toward the end of the smoke... and I often wonder if they're mistaking that tar buildup harsh taste for spice. Some cigars hit you with that spicy taste on your tongue from the beginning, I think that's the taste you're looking for. But when it waits until the last few puffs to hit... you have to wonder if it's just a plain harsh tar burn you're tasting.
I purge my smokes a lot, and it keeps the cigar smooth and tasty. My theory is that you're keeping the smoke cleaned out and you're tasting what the blender really tried to put there for you to taste. If every cigar that you smoke gets "spicy" toward the end, is it really spice that you're tasting? One of the skills that I've picked up here at CS is to know when to stop smoking a particular cigar... there are few smokes that I really burn down to a nub.

Re: Spice and Nicotine content correlation?
I definitely do think that the harshness of nicotene can be confused for spice. On a recent Tatuaje that I had there was a very spicy flavor, however this was not harsh at all. It can be possible to correlate unwanted harshness with a spice flavor. I do anyways.

I have also noticed that as cigars age they become more mellow and often the spice or pepper subsides some. Would this also mean that the nicotine is lowered somehow?

Re: Spice and Nicotine content correlation?
There may be some correlation between the two albeit I believe quite small. Most of the spice or pepper that you will get is from the wrapper, because it can be sensed on the tongue and this is a fairly general taste to some extent in all tobacco.
As a for instance try a Dominican Monte and you can taste all the spice you want but I highly doubt you will call it a head spinner. |
