Good Luck on your move. I always wanted to visit Alaska. To move there well, I don't think I would be ready for that.

No problem, I'm just North of Houston, you can drop it off on your way out. It'll be right here waiting on you when you get back. You will have to come back to thaw out right?

My wife lived in Alaska when she was younger and speaks fondly of her time there. It's far too cold for me but she'd love it if we could move up there.

Good choice. We drove down when we moved and I would not drive anything I cared for. 3/4 of the drive is all gravel road and passing cars kick it up. More than half of the people who drive the AlCan get a ding in the windshield.

Had quite a few people offer to store it for me already!

I've been told Anchorage winters are comparable to Chicago's, maybe even not as cold due to less wind. Probably last longer though. When I went up in Oct it was still only jacket weather

Winters are fairly mild (+20-30) when compared to the interior where you pray it will warm up to -20

Good Luck on your move to Alaska. I hear the scenery is spectacular. Wild salmon tastes great. Little competition for Anejos and Opuses. Happy Holidays

Re: North to Alaska

Alaska? Did someone say Alaska?

Welcome to the Great Land bro! You will either love it or hate it. Seems to be very little middle of the road folks up here.

If you are into outdoor activities, you will be happy. Anchorage has some of the best trails in the nation. I ride my bike to and from work during the summer and can go for over 9 miles through the trails in town before I have to cross a street. The city is over 250,000 in population, but still has some of its small town charm.

Working on th slope will be a shock to your system, the sun will not come up again for another few weeks. Then in the summer it is constant daylight up there. Anchorage gets over 20 hours of daylight in the summer.

As for tobacco shops, there are only a few that offer cigars, but with the 120% tax, most guys buy online for boxes and such and buy a single or two local to support the B&M's.

Pete's Tobacco Shop downtown and the Tobacco Cache on Northern Lights Bvld are the best ones. The Tobacco Cache has a couple tables set up for you to have a seat and enjoy a smoke. There is also one down on Huffman road called Joe's Smoke shop. I have yet to visit there personally, but the sign on the front says they have cigars. The Cheap Smokes stores carry cigarettes and roll your own stuff, not worth the trouble of checking out unless you like dried out Swishers.

We will have to hook up for a cigar once you get settled in.

Re: North to Alaska

Oh, almost forgot.

For a great resturant that is smoker friendly, check out the Bradley House. Great food and they have a nice sign out front warning people that it is a smoke friendly establishment. They have a pretty nice filter system so unless it is really crowded, you will not notice the smoke.

Re: North to Alaska

Yeah,

Sounds cold........anyway, I have to start getting used to the cold as well with my move up to N.C. I am sure you will find it fun; all those choices for cigar shops looks good. The tax is a bitch, but I bet you will find a way around that.

Re: North to Alaska

Few more links for you:

Tobacco Cache- site not updated much, but there are photos of the shop.

Pete's Tobacco Shop- Just address and phone info.

You may find some cigars at some of the Great Alaska Tobacco Company stores. They are tobacco outlets for Carr's/Safeway up here. Some have a small humidor, some do not.

Re: North to Alaska

Just a tip for you.....When you get there you'll want to get a few items to get you to the hunting and fishing spots that few people venture. Your best money is to buy a small boat that has a 5-10hp kicker 4cycle and a snow sled before you buy an tav. You will get to more places by water and snowmobile than any atv could ever get. If I was to do it over again the boat would be #1.

Re: North to Alaska

Houston to Alaska? Good lord. I made the move from Phoenix to Denver this year, and frankly, it BLOWS! . But seriously, while toasty weather is great, there's nothing like living in a place that has great scenery. Then again after only 9 months I'm really considering a return to the desert. Good luck with the move. cheers
