Another reason not to trust CA ratings...

In the Dec 2006 issue (the one wiyh Dennis Haysbert of "24" fame on the cover) I noticed the reviews for the JDN Machito and the Aurora No. 4 were exactly the same word for word:

"This little cigar has a course texture to the wrapper. The smoke has a little bite, with some charry notes and a bit of coffee bean on the palate."

Strangly, the Machito recived a 87 and the Aurora No. 4 recived a 86?

Maybe it was just a typo, but I found it kind of funny nonetheless...

Maybe the review is accurate, but it still is a little hokey.

CA Cigar Reviews SUCK!

If you want to read a magazine with more realistic reviews, read Smoke Magazine. Also, Cigar Magazine which is associated with JR Cigars, is not bad but seems to be driven by cigars sold by JR Cigars.

Some of the very best reviews are right hear on Club Stogie and on the Top 25 Cigar Review Site.

The only, unfotunate, problem with the Top 25 Cigar Review Site, is that not enough people take the time to write up reviews. Hell, there are a host of newer, great cigars, that have come out over the last year or two, that are not even listed on the site, let alone reviewed.

Just more evidence to demonstrate CA's lack of objectivity.

I'm also a disbeliever in CA ratings. I know many like Opus X cigars, and it's rated very highly by CA. But when you got to Top25 it's not even close to being in the Top50. The people have spoken, and it certainly ain't in line with CA.

this is just my opinion but....with CA ratings, the difference between a "91" and a "87 is $$$$$

CA, like a Diamond or an Anejo… is over rated and over priced!

I agree some of their reviews are overly flattering for opus and padron 64, but how do you explain onyx reserves 94 (mini-belicoso) and 90 (robusto)? those are cheap sticks.

Cigar company + ad budget + tobacco = Review score at CA.

Emphasis on Budget............

Did I mention Cigar Dave works the same way..........

Re: Another reason not to trust CA ratings...

CA ratings seem to be kind of a "starting point," just as Top 25 ratings are. But they're certainly NOT a basis for plunking down more than 15 or 20 bucks to try out a single or fiver, then judging for yourself!

As Henry reminded me yesterday... "I got a dozen fishing lures I bought because some A-hole recommended them to me, and they haven't caught one fish! I got four lures that nobody told me about, and I got at least 200 fish on them!"

'Nuff said.

They might as well be reviewing EVERY GNC (generic non cuban) cigar with that generic description! Smoke magazine and Cigar to a lesser extent have better reviews. The best, of course, are the reviews on CS
