Future of NCs
With Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas back in control of Nicaragua, do you think this will have any impact on the supply or quality of NCs?
Those of us old enought to remember the Sandinistas and the Contras during the 1980's, you think their might be a potential embargo on the horizon here, too? (You can pick more than one reply. Totals may not sum to 100% as a result.) Last edited by BiggDawg; 01-14-2007 at 12:28 PM.. Reason: Clarify choices |

Re: Future of NCs
While I do like some Nicaraguan cigars , they would be missed , but I would not take the risk to get them .

Re: Future of NCs
Has having a communist government hurt the quality or production of Cuban cigars? Of Cuban rum?
Ortega knows which side Nicaragua's bread is buttered on; don't think for a moment that he will do anything to hurt the enormous cash cow that is the tobacco industry there.

Re: Future of NCs
I cant see any major changes in the near-term. There is always the looming threat of a Cuba - Venezuela - Nicaragua socialist "partnership" that gets the remaining nations embargoed in the long-term. Not to mention the dealings all three countries have with China.
For better or worse, it would be trade that is the saving grace with Nicaragua and Venezuela. These governments have to deal with the US in order to remain prosperous, and so the door will always be open, if only cracked a bit. |

Re: Future of NCs
If they banned nicaraguan tobacco, I would have two options:
1. Buy a ton of Tatuajes, other Pepin's and Padron's to put away for years and years. or 2. Quick smoking cigars until the cuban embargo is finally finished. I just don't like cigars with tobacco from the DR or other places enough to justify maintaining this hobby. I would probably run out of anejos/opusX before they released more. Maybe I would start smoking a pipe, I used to like smoking cherry flavored tobacco back in highschool.

Re: Future of NCs
I would think that after the complete failure of the Cuban embargo, we would not try the same policy with Nicaragua, particularly since there is not a large group of Nicaraguan exiles pulling political strings requesting such. On the other hand, one would think that after our disaster in Viet Nam, we would approached Iraq a bit differently. One never knows with the current administration. Anything is possible. And if they find oil in Nicaragua, ALL bets are off. Thank goodness that I like Davidoffs and Honduran cigars.

Re: Future of NCs
Isn't this the reason Padron has the other factory, just in case this was to happen again? I don't believe much will become of it either way. Besides, who knows what aged bails are going to come out of this while the manufacturers are moveing their stock around.

Re: Future of NCs
There is a strong market for high quality cigars here in the U.S. Commercial free- enterprise and ingenuity will always find a way to fill the demand which has always existed and always will.
I'm not worried. Where there is money to be made in a particular industry, a way will be found. BTW, What's the big deal about the end of the Cuban embargo? Havanas are quite easily available to anybody who wants them right now. I can go and buy a box this afternoon from any number of sources if I have a mind to... |

Re: Future of NCs
I am shuddering at the thought.. I REALLY LOVE Nicaraguan tobacco. (I love Dominican, Costa Rican, Cuban, Brazilian, Peruvian, American, Mexican, Ecuadorian, and even Honduran too, but that is besides the point.)
The Nicaraguan tobacco industry (along with its coffee industry) is really in a renaissance right now, it will be a shame if it gets thrown back again.. |

If you're saying that we'd all be better off if stupid laws were changed, I couldn't agree more. I was looking at the situation from the pragmatic (cynical?) view from the cigar smoking perspective. Would anything change for the stogie smoker - not really. I'm told you can get a box of isom's for about $265.00 - If havanas are legalized, I doubt that would change much. Would availability increase? Probably. They'd be stored on shelves instead of in a closet. I'm just passing on what I understand to be the case... ![]() |

Re: Future of NCs
I don't think so based upon what I have read. The tobacco manufacturers were there during the war years (before and after) and have accomodations arranged. Tobacco is good for their economy, and the sandinistas are not stupid.
