Smoking Bans in Missouri

After reading the thread with the ban index I haven’t seen any posts about MO, Columbia just passed one that went into effect January 8th, and it is terrible to say the least. Cigar bars, B&M’s no smoking in ANY public business, and they even closed loopholes such as having a private “club” with dues and such. Hopefully something reasonable will come out in the wash. I know Lee’s Summit has one that will start in March or April – if you know of any other towns with the ban please post.

How can they ban, much less enforce, restrictions on private clubs? My guess is it wouldn't stand up in court if appealed past the municipal level, but I'm no attorney (thank Goodness!).
This has gone a little far.

Far cry from my day, when half the floor smoked something in their dorm rooms, and it wasn't always tobacco, either!

It won't. Smoking bans (much the same as liberalism) are about control period. They will not yield for second. The only thing you can hope for is maybe you can move to another state.

Doesn't surprise me a bit. Columbia has always been a PC wannabe.

Re: Smoking Bans in Missouri

That is so true, it was a City Counsel vote that came down 4 to 3 and lasted well into the wee hours of the morning with many local business owners and others trying to keep their rights as Americans. Such a shame, I think I’m going to turn my pad into a “smokers retreat” similar to what Kramer did on Seinfeld (not that it’s not now, but I’m sure smoking friends will be over a lot more since the ban).

BTW – nice to see some Mizzou Alumni on here, where did you guys frequent when you lived here?

Re: Smoking Bans in Missouri

I used to go to a Columbia restaurants to have dinner and a cigar now the only place I can do this is in my hometown at the Longhorn or my Country Club. The owner of the B&M opened a restaurant catering to cigar smokers I'm sure he will have a hard time keeping it open now that you can't smoke in the building.

We need to find a Lawyer willing to stand up to these smoking bans, going all the way to the Supreme Court. Next it will be fast food, alcohol (both of which the bleeding hearts are starting on) or our rights will be taken away.

I have the ability to choose where I go, so do these PC mother farkers if you don't want to be around smokers don't go to where people smoke. Simple, yes, possibly too simple. It's time to rebel, stand up, grow some damn balls and put a stop to our rights being taken away.

The smoke police say 4 million people die every year from second hand smoke, show me 1 body whose cause of death is second hand smoke and I'll kiss your ass.

Re: Smoking Bans in Missouri

Are you talking about the B&M owner in Columbia who opened the restaurant? Because that is a crying shame, such a great place (Grand Cru) full Whiskey list – Scotch and Bourbon, great food and cigar friendly to boot.

They have already gone after fast food – I’m not 100% sure of the details but I know two places – Chicago and New York? Have already passed a ban on –is it trans-fat? I can’t remember the details as they don’t pertain to where I am, but I’m sure someone can shed some light on that situation.

Here is a link to the best cigar-friendly restaurant in my town (they have a couple humidors you can buy Davidoff’s, Opus, all kinds of great stuff, and now you can’t smoke in there, shame, shame, shame:

Yep, my fav B&M and George and Tim are good guys. I have not talked to George since the ban went into effect but he is e-mailing alot of events at the Cru. Must be trying to drum up business.

Re: Smoking Bans in Missouri

I heard a rumor that they had a $200 dollar a plate dinner to pay for the smoking fines, but I forgot to ask Tim when I was in the Nostalgia Shop Friday, needless to say he was puffing on a huge La Gloria and said he wasn’t worried about it in the shop. Haven’t been to the Cru since the week before the ban (but I’m still getting the emails as well – and a side note, trying to get my girlfriend to go to the female cigar appreciation classes-cross your fingers) so I’ll have to go check it out, if you are going to be in town let me know, maybe we can go out there and risk the fine. I know George isn’t going to call the smoking police on us.

Re: Smoking Bans in Missouri

We need a Mid MO Herf, maybe George would set us up in the backroom if not I know my Country Club would host us. It's about 20 minute outside of Columbia. I know a couple Bro's that would attend, if we do it this spring we can include some Golf or fishing maybe both.
