I have had Mayorga before and loved them! I will have to try the High Octanes.

Great suggestion Don! Thanks!

How about the JR Alternatives? Are they any good? Seem to get good ratings in the Top 25!

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I've had the JR Alternatives to the Fuente Hemingway (the funny shaped cigar). I bought a bundle of these. Construction was good, some burned uneven and some were plugged but not too many. The taste however was non-existant. Almost no flavor.

For $2.75 a stick you cannot beat the Saint Louis Rey Reserva Especial Rothschild Maduro. They're harder to find than the naturals, but worth evey penny. Full flavored, but the dark maduro wrapper add a slightly sweet, creaminess that complements the strength.

And when on sale, they are only $90 a box or so. No better everyday smoke.

You might want to try the Super Premium 2nds at Cigars International. 4 1/2 x 50 maduro bundle of 25 for $29.95. They are supposed to be Villazon 2nds to either a Punch or HDM Rothschild. I've enjoyed them immensely.

Hey Quixote, havent talked with you in awhile. Haven't been back to Fredricksburg since I arrived in Va back in the winter. Hope everything is going well with you. You getting the Saint Louis Rey from the store on Caroline Street? Planning on another trip over from Charlottesville in the next couple of weeks. Frank B

Re: Best everyday smoke

After reading this thread, I bought a varied selection of Flor de Olivas. I was always hesitant to buy the cheap cigar with a red white and blue label. I figured that it couldn't be any good as they would ask more if it were.

Thanks for the heads up!!

I recommend Flor de Oliva, they are rolled right, burn nicely, taste a lot better than a lot of $7.00 cigars and for $2.00 a stick you can smoke all you want. I'm a big fan of Hemingway Short Storys. The shapes by Flor de Oliva are a good substitute for an everyday smoke so you can save your good ones for when you have a lot of time. Kind of like drinking Jack Daniels instead of wiping out your bottle of Bookers. Does that make sense?

Damnit 909 keep quiet on those FdO shapes

Alright I have been holding on to this secret long enough.. These suckers aren't made anymore. I better get some ring guage out of this.

The best sub $1 smoke going right now IMO is Professor Sila Petit Corona at Cigar International.

Razor sharp straight burn, mild to medium body, damn delicious. I tried the Robusto in the Sumatra wrapper and found it too mild. They have recently found a few Cameroon wrapper ones as well; haven't tried those yet. I was going to order some of the Bala Figurados, those are already sold out..

You would think these at 4" x 42 ring would be a quick smoke; but I have gotten a half hour out of each one without nubbing it.

TXMATT, if I had ring guage to give it'd be yours. They quit making the FDO shapes?????????

The shop that I was in the other day had about 50 of them, if this is true, I'll buy them all.

NAH, they still make FDO shapes.. They don't make the Professor Sila's anymore.. Think the factory closed in '01 which is a shame since they started in the 30s. I can see how my post was confusing since I was saying that before I revealed the Silas.

FDO still Made; Professor Sila no longer made.. Sorry for the confusion..

I think the Oliva Grand Cameroon is a great buy at 25 for about $50.

I'm pretty loyal to Dieter's shop, so I only buy elsewhere what they don't carry. I wish he had the SLR Roth maduro. A couple places around here carry SLR, but have never seen the maduro anywhere except for a discount cig store in Culpeper that has a suprisingly decent walk-in.

Hope you can still make it over here, with your knee busted and all.
PM sent.

I like the Cameroons a lot also Charlie. Seems many of the people that like the other FdO lines don't like their Cameroons though. I think these cigars are just shipped a bit quick and once they have sat for 6 months to a year they are great. I have a full box of the Belicoso size sitting in the bottom of my coolidor now.

The Maddies and Originals on the other hand are smokable right at the shop; even at my local that keeps them too wet. I like 'em better once they have "dried" to 65% but if the shop has 'em at 73% they are still tasty. I am aging some of these bundles right now as well to see if they get even better or not. I figure I will try them at 6 months and a year and decide if they improve much or not. I will try aging some Connies after that I think.
