Planning a Cigar Trip in Costa Rica? Want to?

I just recently wrote my third and final article detailing my recent trip to Central America. In this third article, I talk about another small cigar factory in the Puriscal region of Costa Rica: Vegas de Santiago.

I also make a recommendation for those of you who want to visit Puriscal. I have photos and contact information for Las Alturas de Puriscal, a wonderful bed & breakfast inn. I also include photos of the factory tour at Vegas de Santiago.

Enjoy, and please let me know if you decide to make this trip. You won't regret it.

I'm assuming you've been to the lCdH in San Jose and eaten at the restaurant? Have you gotten a chance to sit down and speak with the owner?

He's a great guy and took care of myself and the ex last year in January when I went down there.

Hey Doc,
Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed your trip synopsis a lot. Makes me wanna pack a bag and head down there. I think you should go back again...y'know...for scientific purposes only.

Yes, I've been to LcdH in San Jose, but I didn't eat at the restaurant. I will have to do that next time. I went to three different shops in San Jose, there are two others besides the LcdH. One is a small shop connected with the Hotel Diana, downtown. It's got a small but quality selection and nice people. There was another small shop very close to the main park, but I can't remember the name.

There was also a place called the "Cigar Bar." It was actually a whore house. A very long story and it got ugly.

Believe me, I do plan to go back. Costa Rica is a great country. There is so much to do and something for everybody: There is world class sport fishing, scuba, snorkelling, and surfing. There are rain forests, cloud forests, jungles, volcanoes, and much more.

CR is a small country, but it is difficult to get around because the roads are so bad. So, I suggest not to spend too much of your trip driving to polar locations within the country.

I would definitely recommend Monteverde and the Cloud forest and zip lines there. Those are fun. Also, near there is Arenal Volcano. There are local hot springs where you can go and relax in the hot water and have dinner at the restaurant.

Tortuguero is really nice. It's a tropical jungle location and you have to get there by boat. You can try your hand at watching the huge sea turtles lay their eggs and you can tour the jungles and rainforest. The beaches are warm and wonderful, but the heat and the bugs can be ferocious during June and July.

Absolutely there is great tobacco being grown in Ecuador. They are growing all kinds of great wrapper leaf. I don't know if they have any rolling factories down there, but it would be worth checking in to.

Since I just got back from Costa Rica, I probably won't go back until next year. My next trip will be to Guatemala.

I am going to do some investigating on "las granjas del tabaco de Ecuador".

Guatemala is a great place to visit. I was there a few years ago... The people and the food is wonderful! As you probably know, the soil is very volcanic.

Have a great trip to Costa Rica!
