Why auctions can be dangerous things.

Posted on 6 March 2007 at CigarCyclopedia:

As expected, bidders went wild for the Arturo Fuente Anejo Reserva No. 77 cigars on auction at Famous Smoke Shop’s CigarAuctioneer.com site in a bidding war that ended in Monday. The Anejo line uses the famed Opus X binder and filler blend, but offers a Connecticut-grown maduro wrapper for an especially hearty taste.

A total of 20 cigars were offered individually and despite a suggested retail price of $9.25, bidding quickly shot up with one buyer winning a single cigar for $59.95! The next-highest bid was $32.00 and the other eight winning bidders offered between $31.05 and $30.00 at the low end.

All told, 10 winning bidders paid a total of $638.11 for the 20 cigars, an average of $31.91 each!

At the risk of belaboring the obvious, looks like some guys went a little bonkers! Very expensive Sharks.

I love me some Anejos but I would never pay that much for a single cigar.

I guess the old competitive juices kicked and he had had to win. Many a man has overpaid (including me) because of this.

Either that or he's just stoopid

Re: Why auctions can be dangerous things.

It's called "auction fever" and it can cost you a lot of money!! You get caught up in the excitement of the cometition and loose sight of common sense. Unscrupulous auction companies have shills in the audience to take advantage of this. They wait until the action on an item begins to fade, then jump in and bid it up. They are very skilled at bidding it high and then bailing out, leaving the chump with the excessive bill.

And then there are the two guys, each determined to outbid the other......
Now, that's a REAL bidding war, and it can get really silly, especially if both parties have near unlimited funds and big egos. And if it is a charity auction, look out! You can end up spending about 1/2 a million for a humidor & 100 cigars.

So, the moral is, if you are bidding, set a limit and if/when the bidding gets to your limit, drop out. You won't get everything you want, but you also won't get taken to the cleaners.

When I first started out with this hobby and, before I found CS, I tried to bid over at Famous; it is a complete and utter joke, and full of yahoos who simply don't understand. I may have won one bid and I never went back. You can see a few over at C-Bid too but not nearly as bad as over at Famous

Re: Why auctions can be dangerous things.

Looks like they got over bid. It is so easy to get caught up and over bid. This looks like a prime example of it.

But if you want it and can't get it sometime you have to sy WTF and bite the bullet.

In this case if I had bitten the bullet, I would be saying WTF all right...as in "WTF did I just do???"

Re: Why auctions can be dangerous things.

I have been really good at avoiding C-Bid btu when I did frequent it way too much I always tried to stick to bidding the highest price I wanted to pay and forgetting about it so I would not fall into the pissing matches that occur on all auction sites. It was especially nice when you placed a bid and a couple of days went by and one morning you get an e-mail saying "Congratulations you won!"
Hell, I have even made way too much on car parts and Playstation games on Ebay because of pissing matches between two bidders. Most of the crap I sold went for full retail if not more.

That is alot of money to pay for those smokes, It is easy to get caught up in the
auction and over-bid.

You can buy a lot of Pappy Van Winkle 20- year old bourbon and still get some nice Montes at that price.
