2nds aren't all there cracked up to be.
I received a bundle of Rocky Patel 2nd's churchill. Half the price of what they would be if pressed and labeled. Funny thing is the advertising describes that it's the same cigar, just with blemishes and characteristics not up to par as the regular cigar. Well after smoking one of these round, bandless, slightly thinner it seemed, and placed in an inexpensive cello wrapper, I realized the taste was ok, but the overall experience just wasn't up to snuff. Same thing happened to me with those La Gloria Cubana seconds, El Credito's I think there called. Anyone feel this way about 2nd's?

My RP 2nds (from CI) have been great. I also think that with buying 2nds you have to take the good with the bad.

Re: 2nds aren't all there cracked up to be.
I haven't bought any seconds because I'm prejudiced against them. They just don't sound worth it to me. I don't smoke so many cigars that I need to buy them 1/2 price to make a big difference nor do I want to smoke second rate cigars when I do smoke (as far as I know without trying them
).Good luck with the next batch of seconds.

IMHO if you want to try a really good second. Try Private Stock. These are Davidoff Seconds and in my experience are a quality smoke.

I love my Perdomo 2nds, and I would probably love the RP 2nds too, if I liked the brands all that much. IMO if a cigar is pretty good at $6 a stick, it's damned good at $2 a stick!

I don't care for all seconds - but I do like several of the Tampa Sweethearts, and the Consuegra 84. As for RP smokes - I order these (click here) in either the Toro or Torp and even keep them in their own little humidor.

I like the seconds because it gives me a chance to have 20 of them sitting in my humi for a while. There are not as consistant as the labeled versions that's true imho but make up for it in value.

They are a perfect quick smoke and cheap enough to smoke a few each day and not feel like I'm spending a bunch of money. I'm no pro but have a hard time seeing much in the way of blemishes or sacrifice in taste in these seconds. If the coronas are ever off back order, I will buy them as well. |

Re: 2nds aren't all there cracked up to be.
I got 3 bundles of Edge Off Color from Holts last Oct. Smoked a couple and they were great. I've also smoked Edge 1sts, and see no real difference in the experience - I would even say I love the off-color a bit more... Larry

Re: 2nds aren't all there cracked up to be.
I don't buy them anymore, 'cause they aren't worth the inconsitency to me... but I've had similar experiences...
they definitely do better with a lot of recouperating in a humi... they must toss em on the floor or have 'em sitting in the sun, or generally forget about them for a while... 'cause the wrapper doesn't seem up to snuff to me... just seems neglected. the lack of box pressing isn't as critical to me... my first vintage experience was robustos from a 6 stick sampler box... they are pretty much round... the box pressing, if done at all, has pretty much loosened up to nothing... I had 2 of those sample boxes before I got a regular box of vintages... and finally saw that they were supposed to be box pressed... oh well... the firsts aren't that much more expensive for someone like me that has maybe a cigar a wee... at that rate, it really doesn't make sense to be buying 2nds... unless money was a huge issue... if I was smokin' one or more of these a day tho, the cost savings of the 2nds would look mighty nice. |
