'Net Shipping Options

While I am a supporter of the local B&M guys, I occassinally have a hard time finding certain cigars I am lusting after and wind up buying online. What gets me is with all the different options and the EASE of access to all of them, why 'Net dealers don't take advantage of the fastest/cheapest way of shpping??? While I understand UPS/Fed Ex offer tracking, so does the USPS on their priority mail, for only a modest upcharge.

I just ordered from a western US dealer who chooses FedEx ground for their standard shipping, ten sticks, $7 bucks shipping. ETA of those PERISHABLE products is 6-8 days. I checked out priority mail with tracking and delivery confirmation and it's only about $5. The only other option this dealer offered was 2nd day (which after Wed is four days) for about $12.

C'mon Internet dealers.....the USPS picks up for free, offers you all the options Brown and FedUp offer, but can go coast to coast in 3 days!!!! I think the method of shipping should be up to the purchaser!
Now, I know some will say, well, just go elsewhere......well, the short answer to that is that this was the only dealer who had both the cigars I wanted in any quantity, much less 5 packs of each.

The shipping world is one of the most competitive I've ever seen. I'd just like to see more options, and no one married to one truck.

Just my

I agree with your post. I often prefer USPS. They deliver on Saturday, unlike UPS ground. The last two times I ordered from el diablo I got my order on Saturday--just two days. DHL is a joke...had nothing but trouble with them and it seems like, from what Ive read, many have had the same bad experiences. Fedex has always been good to me, but for the money I'll take the USPS. Im happy that cbid allows you to select it for all shipments over dreadful DHL.

Is there somewhere on CBid where you have the option to choose USPS over DHL?

I have yet to have a problem with DHL in 10-12 shipments, but I have heard the stories.

Re: 'Net Shipping Options

I just think it's easier for Internet dealers to NOT have to 'chose' or allow up to chose.
You can insure, certify delivery etc etc with the post office right on their website, print the label and the mailman picks it up FREE, and yes, they do delivery on Saturday. Plus with USPS, there is no weekly 'service fee' like there is from UPS or FedEx. You have to subscribe to their service to get their truck to stop if you don't have anything being delivered. When I had my own business, it was a bill from Brown that came every week, with Net 7 terms, with all my shipping PLUS the (at the time) $7-$10. And, talk about an upcharge, try getting Saturday delivery from UPS or Fed Ex. It's at least double their normal charge.

I really don't like having product bouncing around a FedEx truck for over a week without having to pay a huge 'express' fee.

I know there are Internet dealers who read this board, I'd love to hear from you.

Re: 'Net Shipping Options

The Volume of packages you do has an effect on what it costs to ship. UPS pickup isn't free but you get a discounted rate. As for USPS they are alot more expensive for most of our shipping needs. Sending a box is very expensive, also USPS can be very slow... Their speed also depends on FedEx as they are the sub-contractor. Tracking Numbers are free with UPS... I don't know where people get the idea it's an extra cost option.

Also USPS may stop shipping tobacco alltogether why? You may know some states don't allow tobacco shipping from out a state with out a Tobacco license but the loop hole is you guessed it, USPS.

We do alot of wholesaling... sending 20-60lb packages via USPS don't work

Re: 'Net Shipping Options

I know tracking is free with ups and I know of no legislation currently enacted that precludes shipping via the USPS. I also know tracking is about $2 more with the post office.

Still in all, USPS Priority Mail from coast to coast is about 3 days, often less.
FedEx ground is 6-8 with no Saturday delivery, without major upcharge.

Until the feds crack down on inter state shipping of tobacco (like how many ISOM's come into this country every year and that's a FEDERAL rap) I think the option of how to get anything shipped should be up to the person paying the freight.

They are already trying to ban tobacco shipments via USPS

Re: Cbid shipping, Steve asked how to select USPS. For those interested, you have to call them to make the permanent switch to USPS.
