74 Degrees?
As the weather has been nicer and by nicer i mean hotter I decided to take a look at my temp on my humidor (not usually a thing a look at considering the house is at 68 almost all the time) It read 74 degree F. Wanted to know if this is really something i should worry about and what is the real "max limit" before i should considering moveing my 'gars into another area? Thanks guys

Re: 74 Degrees?
i am right at 74 as well, so this should be interesting.
any clues on how to drop the temps? i have froze big bags of ice to keep in a towel behind my humifor on the shelf that it is on. would a cooler with the humi in it, plus some ice packs help? |

Re: 74 Degrees?
I don't know if you need to worry all that much about 74 degrees. My coolerdor ranges from 69-74 on a regular basis and I have NEVER had any problems.
That's not to say that I'm right about the 74 being safe I'm only saying that I've never had a problem and I've kept cigars for a number of years. I'm curious to hear what others have to say on this subject though. Rob |

Re: 74 Degrees?
Moving the humi to floor will help a little due to the cooler temps down lower. If you have a basement move it there.

Re: 74 Degrees?
moving it down closer to the floor helped by 2 degrees. now i keep it the bottom drawer of my entertainment unit with a bag of frozen water behind it, and it was 66 degrees this morning! the outside temp did drop a lot too, so I will monitor it as it gets warmer again.

Re: 74 Degrees?
I've been to the mid 80s in the summer and had no I'll effects. Thankfully, I have central air going in soon. Perhaps I won't have to worry myself to death anymore. I can't imagine 74 is an issue. Of course, I'm a sniper when it comes to checking temp and hydro readings as well as checking my sticks.
You'll be fine. However, if something goes wrong, I'm not responsible. D

Re: 74 Degrees?
I realize I'm quite the newbie here, but I'll give you my experience with temps as high as the mid 80's. Apparently whatever procedures the major cigar makers are using to combat beetles must be working. I got away from cigar smoking for awhile and had some Ashton's, RyJ's, 5 Vegas Golds and one Montecristo sitting unattended and uncared for in my humidor all through last summer here in Texas. When I hit the max reading on my digital hygro it read 86*. And I guarantee it was at that temp for some time. Not a beetle to be found, and after a month of 65%RH they have smoked great.
I think the trick is to deal with reputable brand names and places. All my cigars were and are from CI or a small B&M close to my house. I realize those who smoke ISOM's and experiment around with lesser known brands may need to be much more cautious. I may just have been lucky and now have jinxed myself, but this has been my experience. Last edited by bmrdave; 04-25-2007 at 02:00 PM.. Reason: repeated myself :) |

Re: 74 Degrees?
Same concern here... have been keeping my coolerdor and large desktop humi upstairs, and have been noticing that I've been pushing 75 degs for a day or two at a time as we get through the "warm, but still too cool for AC" period of the year. The upstairs was getting warmer for a few days, until the weather gets crappy again, etc., etc. It is now about 50 degs and raining outside, so today won't be a problem day.
Nonetheless, as we've had some 80 deg days already and as I am paranoid, I moved them into the basement. My theory is that, while I'm sure it is "fine" to keep them at around 74 degrees, it would really suck to learn that it isn't fine. And once things are determined to be "not fine"... it sounds like it will be too late, save for going through the process of the full freeze of uncontaminated cigars. I've hit the slope too hard since december to watch it all go up in smoke. Wait... I do want it all to go up in smoke. I've hit the slope too hard since december to watch it all go up not in smoke. Better safe than sorry is my opinion. Just find a nice place to keep 'em in the basement.

Re: 74 Degrees?
I hate to be an alarmist but here is what can happen when your humi gets too hot.
![]() ![]() Beetles hit about 25 of my sticks when the temp went up a few weeks ago. Of course the have good taste and went for some of my best. I check my humi every day so the little SOB's worked fast. My strong suggestion is that if you can't keep your cigars in the low 70's or lower you should freeze everything. Good luck! Farnk

Re: 74 Degrees?
Last summer my desktop humidors both stayed between 74 and 76 all summer long and I had an outbreak in one of them towards the end of the summer. I lost about a dozen cigars I would have much rather smoked.
![]() Since then I've gotten in the habit of freezing any singles that are destined for a desktop and have set up a wine fridge for storage. |
