Was It In My Cut?

I'm still new to the game, but on the weeks I'm not on tour, recording or on the set, I'm in a pool league on Tuesday's & Thursday's. I normally smoke a cigar on those days before the long 5 hour battles begin. So yesterday I had a rough day.
I let go of my agent & parted ways from my management.
I've been with each since '01. So a 6 year relationship with 2 people that I trusted the most went down the drain. I went to 1 of my go to cigars
Romeo y Julieta Bully.
They've always been good to me. Everything was perfect. From the draw to the burn. BUT about 2/3 of the way through, it started to get this sour & bitter taste on the finish. I've smoked these down to the burning of my fingers before with no variance of taste...was it in my cut that gave it this taste?
It was a crappy way to end a normally good cigar and a crappy way to end a sh**y day.

Re: Was It In My Cut?

Could be from puffing on it too hard or too fast. Could it be your stress level caused you to really huff on it?

Maybe it was just a bad one...

I may have pulled too fast and hard. I was trying to finish it in about 30 minutes. Maybe I got too anxious to try and seek quick pleasure.
I did take the time to heat it and not put the direct flame to the tip when lighting. but purging the cigar???

If you liked them in the past, don't quit them based on 1 bad cigar. It could have been any one of a lot of things, ranging from a bad cigar to the way you smoked it. Good luck with your manager problem. Given time things usually work out for the best.

Re: Was It In My Cut?

It could have been caused from smoking it too fast, or it might have just been an "off" stick.

the cigar will some times build up tar and gases. by purging the cigar you are burning off all the crap that has built up, to do this just blow through the cigar, rather than sucking in. After you do this let the cigar rest for a few minutes before smoking again. Watch for falling ash and for a really cool trick in when it's darker out, hold a flame in front of the stick as you purge.

It seems like you were smoking to fast. Isn't the bully on the larger end of the cigar spectrum?

Some do it, some don't!!

I'm in the "some do it" crowd.

Basically, you blow back thru the cigar at several points during the smoke. It clears out some of the accumulated solids from the smoke, and tends to smooth out the smoke, particularly in the latter stages of a stick. Don't put a heavy blow on the stick, just a steady exhale thru the stick a couple of times. I usually try to purge at the one-third points, but maybe a little more as the stick gets near the end. Oh, big tip: Make sure you have ashed before you purge. Purging tends to loosen the ash, and it will ALWAYS fall into your shirt pocket or your lap if you forget, and purge with a long ash!!!

As to your specific problem on that stick, I would say you either got a bad stick, or more likely, you rushed it and overheated the cigar. Been there, done that, will probably be guilty of it again!

Good luck on your search for a new manager!

Re: Was It In My Cut?

Thanks all for your tips. I was honest when I told you that I was a newbie in the art of smoking & cigar appreciation. I've usually enjoyed them over the course of an hour. A long drive on I95, sitting in a smoking room waiting for my next flight, out on the course, or just b/c it's a nice day.... yesterday's was more of a forced I need to relax smoke that yeah... the Bully's kind of a long one.
But I'll definitely try purging when I smoke.
Do you have any tips to avoid over-heating? Sometimes I do get a little anxious when it's a good smoke and tend to pull on it a little harder.

Try the one minute rule between puffs/draws. It seems to work quite well for me, because I have a tendency to smoke too fast as well. Only problem is some sticks might have issues staying lit.

Re: Was It In My Cut?

No worries, RyJ hasn't been around this long for no reason. I gotta believe that you pulled to fast 'cause of the stress level in your head. Calm down and smoke another one.
