crap....haha. I know its only going to get hotter and in my frat house i have no air conditioning. Luckily when i go home I will have access to AC. This is a dreadful time of year for storing cigars if you have no cooling power.

hmmm....perhaps this is the time to investigate a wine cooler.

Either go with a wine cooler or start freezing everything as it comes in. At those temperatures it's just a matter of time before you see your first beetle.

That's pretty hot, watch out for beetles. Someone mentioned elsewhere they laid a wrung out damp town on the wop of theirs and the evaporation cooled it down a bit, not sure if it would cool yours down enough though with it sittin at 79. Does your frat house have a basement? If it does try sticking it down there, tho that might be dangerous, leaving cigars unguarded in a frat house....

Cigar sauna, eh. I'd look at either a wine cooler or some way to keep my babies cool. Otherwise you might end up with all sorts of things you don't want.

If you don't want to put the money down for a wine coolerdor,
just buy a regular cooler.

Put your whole humi in there and add some ice packs wrapped in towels.
You have to exchange them for fresh cold ones maybe twice a day,
but it's a cheap solution for those really hot days.

Re: 79 degrees in the humidor....

Check out eBay for some scratch and dent wine coolers. I just got one of the 28 bottle Edgstars, which are thermoelectric, on scratch and dent special for under $200 shipped on eBay. How bout these:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search...e=search&fgtp=

Get that and a pound of heartfelt beads, then set your temperature to the highest setting, and you'll be set at 65 degrees. I can't tell you what peace of mind it has brought. I would advise you to definitely go with the 28 bottle count if you are planning on storing more than 100 cigars. They aren't as big as you may think you when you factor in the interior insulation.

Re: 79 degrees in the humidor....

Is it safe to have them in there without additional humidification?

I'm thinking that I could replace those racks with teak planks, and just keep all my sticks in there like that. I could add a 2"X4"X12" bed of crystals or something...but would I need it?

That'd make one BIG humidor, for under $200....I'd be all over that.

Re: 79 degrees in the humidor....

I would suggest buying a Peltier Thermoelectric cooling device from just about any electronics parts catalog. If you're handy with a soldering iron, all you would have to do is connect a power supply. There are many that run at 12volts DC and up.

I'm going to post about this as I've been researching this a bit lately.

I'd defintely put in some humidification. When I first turned on the unit the humidity in my fridge was at about 50%, and that's in Central Florida. I don't think you can go wrong with the heartfelt beads or something similar.

Re: 79 degrees in the humidor....

it will only be that hot for a little while. about another week and even then it shouldnt get much hotter than 75 which is still in the green i feel.

Last summer i did the cooler thing and it worked great, i was runnin about 65 degrees, only problem is, that it was so high maitenance to place and replace frozen ice packs.

I also heard that almost all companies freeze there cigars or the tobacco before rolling or distributing them, if thats a rumor let me know heh wouldnt want to be wrong in that department, as I only have NC sticks in my humi.

One thing: It seems that each unit has a different internal thermostat. I have the same exact unit and when set to high, the fridge tried to get down to about 58 degrees. While that temp is better than a high one, it was impossible to keep my humidity up. I had to invest in a Temp Controller, which will run you an extra 70 bucks or so.

Long story short, it seems some get lucky and get Edgestars that work great without modding, others dont and require some extra tinkering. Anyone thinking of going this route should do some searching in the Accessories forum, there is a ton of great info. Most recently myself and a couple other on the board all seemed to be making winecoolerdors concurrently and there were a bunch of threads which contain some good info.

Good luck, and anyone thinking of doing this feel free to PM me

Huh, that stinks. If you don't mind me asking, what temperature does the room you keep the cooler in usually run? I swear I read somewhere that the effacacy of thermoelectrics greatly depends on the temperature of the environment in which you keep them. I know the room I keep mine in is typically in the upper-70s, even reaching into the 80s at times. I wonder if that doesn't actually help maintain a rather moderate temperature of 63-66 degrees in my fridge.
