Cigar Trivia
How about all the Cliff Claven (however you spell it) type apes post trivia bits about cigars and smoking into this thread.
Here's one most of you probably already know: Stogie - shortened from Conestoga, a region near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Stogie was coined to describe the long, skinny cheap cigars favored by drivers of the Conestoga style of covered wagons. Stogie eventually became the term for all cheap cigars. IE a Padron Fuma would be rightfully called a stogie however a PAM would not. Please enlighten me, give me your best cigar trivia! -Matt- |

Re: Cigar Trivia
I don't think I know any good trivia. I heard that Cuban cigars are rolled on the thighs of virgins. That's true, right?

Re: Cigar Trivia
the H. Upmann brand was named after a German banker, Herman Upmann.
Montecristo is named after the book, "the count of montecristo". sancho panza is named after a characther in the book, "don quixote". san cristobal de la habana is the name that the original settlers of havana called their city. their cigars names are after the 4 fronts that guarded the city. the first brand to put art on their boxes was Ramon Allones. there's more but i'm getting a little too tipsy to think straight. Ring Gauge is the width of a cigar measured in 64ths of an inch. so, a 32 RG cigar is half an inch wide (if i remember correctly). either that or circumferance... someone will correct me while i take another sip... if you all see someone sliding around on one foot, other one propped up, it's me doing my capt morgain impersonation..

Re: Cigar Trivia
- Quai d'Orsay was named for a famous bridge in France...why I don't know
- The churchill size was named for "Sir Winston" but thats a no brainer LOL - Bolivar is named after Simon Bolivar, a Venezuelan warrior who liberated all or part of what is today Venezuela, Columbia, Peru and Bolivia. - Trinidads were originally produced only for Fidel. He used them as gifts for foreign diplomats. - Por Larranaga is named for a line in the poem "The Betrothed" - Punch this line takes its name from the popular character of Punch so widely seen in English puppetry in the 19th century. Today's lithographed boxes still show the comically-dressed Punch enjoying a cigar while his faithful pet stands by. there are a few more.

Re: Cigar Trivia
Thought I'd see if I can "re-light" this!
Apparently Winston Churchill is "said" to have smoked approximately 300,000 cigars in his lifetime, biographers have written that he smoked 3000 - 4000 cigars per year! Now by my calculations 300,000 at 3000/year is 100 years and at 4000/year is 75 years. So either he smoked a truck load when no one was looking or someone is ing! He apparently smoked 10 per day, which would net him about 4000/year, however the 300,000 thing.... I dunno. The Serie D.No.4 in the Partagas Serie D. No.4 is short for Serie Du Connoisseur No.4 - but you probably already new that.

Re: Cigar Trivia
"In the US it was actually a woman who kick-started the cigar-making industry. During the early 1800s, tobacco was widely grown in Connecticut, but shipped to the West Indies for rolling into cigars, which were then shipped back to Connecticut for distribution and sales. A certain Mrs. Prout, the wife of a Connecticut tobacco farmer thought it would be much more profitable to cut all those associated transportation costs, and roll the tobacco at home. She hired a group of neighbourhood women and started a factory rolling cigars right there in Connecticut. She turned out to be right, of course, because by 1870, Connecticut had 235 cigar factories."

Re: Cigar Trivia
Cigars were originally sold in bundles, covered with pigs' bladders. One or two vanilla pods were added to improve on the odor.

Re: Cigar Trivia
Catherine the Great started the tradition of cigar bands. She had hers banded with silk as she did not wish to touch the rough texture of the cigar.
