I know it may seem like treating us like 3 year olds but come on we should have learned by now.
I don't agree with the embargo from a smokers perspective but I do agree with it from a political perspective as a stand against communism.
Ok, I've read a fair amount of this post and figure I have to bring this up. Cuba is not and never has been communist. It's a socialist country. And no, they aren't the same thing. Ask any Russian who ever tried to own property.

Castro made offers to both the US and the USSR to make diplomatic visits. The US refused to allow Castro an audience with president. In the year the embargo was put into effect it was prior to Cuba being Communist. For along time the US administration was unsure if Cuba was communist. The US out of fear decided to enact the embargo because Cuba was trading with the USSR. Also the US saw Castro nationalizing industry and thought it was a sign that we should embargo.
Castro had been making overtures to the Soviet Union as far back as the mid-1950s. Initially there was a surprising bit of support for Castro in the State Dept. and among the elite (much of it in reaction to the corruption of Batista)...it was only after Castro came to power that the mask started coming off and the general public saw him for what he was.

Could you expound on the difference a little?

Before both the 1917 Russian Revolution and the 1959 Cuban Revolution, private citizens could own property. After both revolutions, private property was expropriated by the State. I don't see a difference between the two.

Not true. Cuban citizens to this day own private property. In fact, land for a Cuban citizen is exceptionally cheap. Building materials on the other hand are very expensive and that causes many to take years to build a home. But they do and it is theirs. In the 1959 revolution all land was taken by the state and then re-issued to the people, a little fact that is too often overlooked. The only hitch is that the government dictates where that land is. They also own vehicles and other private goods and property. They are paid wages for their jobs (they have a 0% unemployment, lose your job, the government will find you one. It may not be what you want but you will work, sounds yards better than our welfare system!), they pay for food and goods with money. All are very different from the form of communism seen in the former USSR (which wasn't true communism either as there was a hierarchy in that society which goes against the pure communist doctrine).
