please don't start smoking cigarettes. That is when you move to addiction instead of hobby. just eat before you smoke. I use to have to eat a big meal before a smoke. I still drink a soft drink while smoking, well, unless I'm hittin the Scotch. You'll get there. Keep it fun and relaxing. Smoke a little slower if need be.

Hmmmm. I guess I've never really had this problem. Maybe I just smoke more slowly than the average smoker. One thing is for sure - I never inhale. Only rarely does the nicotine affect me (but when it does, it is not a good thing). I'd suggest you put the cigar down between puffs (don't leave it in your mouth), smoke more slowly, hold the smoke in your mouth for less time, and smoke outdoors when possible. Other than that, give it time.

Re: Will my tolerance ever increase????

When I smoke a cigar, my body feels like crap the next morning. Not sure why, but it might have something to do with the fact I have a very mild form of asthma, but I digress. Same goes for vodka. I can drink whiskey and be fine, but vodka, even a small mudslide with hardly any vodka in it makes me feel .

As for the person who can't taste, I am right there with you. Only recently have I thought I tasted something in a cigar, so I did a review. I'm still unsure if what I tasted was indeed what I tasted...If that makes sense.

Each path varies and one has to figure out where his path leads and go on from there. (Self note* Stop trying to be deep)

Re: Will my tolerance ever increase????

I mostly have smoked maduros and recently started smoking lighter smokes to just get a taste and try new things but honestly the darker fuller cigars remain my favorite. I don't really get nauseous but within an hour or so after smoking I'll get lightheaded and not feel good. Sometimes my head starts swimming really badly (happened with the CAO mx2) and I had to stop smoking in the middle of it. I always eat before I smoke but the sugar thing never has seemed to help much with this. I just was hoping that after a few more smokes I will be able to handle a bigger, fuller cigar. I have this gorgeous camacho sitting in my humidor but the thing is massive, and very tight so I figure it will probably be a 3 hour cigar. I am just afraid to light it and have to quit a quarter of the way through wasting all that tasty leaf.

I have 1 word for you: Gravol.
I take a tablet or 2 (depending on how many I'm going to smoke) and I'm good to go. My buddies all know I have a glass stomach, but with a couple tablets I'm good to go for an all-day 5 cigar herf. Laugh if you will, but I enjoy it enough to do whatever it takes.
I don't find sugar helps much either, but your tolerance will develop slowly so long as you smoke regularly.

Everyone that is saying eat before you smoke is giving good advice. Also, drinking something sweet while smoking helps.

One good way to help a lot is to eat a ton everyday until you gain a bunch of weight. Your tolerance should go way up then!

Re: Will my tolerance ever increase????

Sweet definitely helps. I was feeling a little dizzy and nauseous after I smoked a Gurkha Anniversario perfecto a few days ago. I had a glass of iced tea with two spoons of sugar in it, and I felt better almost instantly.

I feel it *sometimes* from a particularly strong cigar; but generally don't. Smoke slowly, don't inhale, eat something before hand, and have sugars available in case you feel woozy.

Re: Will my tolerance ever increase????

Why not just smoke medium cigars.
There are ton out there.
Maybe smoke petite Coronas for a while.

Some to the mild smokes have great complexity so they can be very enjoyable without the buzz.

Re: Will my tolerance ever increase????

Tolerance does not blossom overnight. It takes time and experience. If you really want to up it then smoke a camacho every day regardless of how sick you get. Doesn't sound like fun does it?

Enjoy what your body can handle now and age the fuller smokes in the wait.

Re: Will my tolerance ever increase????

Several good tips already posted. Some I may add:

-Slow down your smoking pace. You may be puffing way too frequently on the cigar. You may be more apt to inhale smoke and the cigar can get too hot, increasing nicotine.

-Make sure there is some air in lungs before you take a puff. This will make exhaling the smoke easier and provide a buffer to prevent additional smoke from getting in your lungs.

-Blow through the cigar every ten minutes to push out the tar and stale smoke that builds in the cigar.

-Make sure the room has some ventilation.

I think if you concentrate on taking your time with the cigar, you'll fare much better. My girlfriend and other non-smokers can enjoy a rich, strong cigars without an issue when the concentrate on these tips. Good luck

Definitely don't go to cigarettes. My dad tried to go from cigarettes to cigars and was never able to experience the flavors of a cigar like I could.

Like everyone else has said just start off with something you can handle. Don't think of it as a macho thing where you gotta smoke the darkest strongest cigar. There are some amazing mild to medium bodied cigars that you'll enjoy.

I started with Dunhills and Cohiba Red Dots. Then found Fuentes. The regular Arturo Fuente line was my favorite for a couple of years. It was a good 4 or 5 years of smoking 1-2 per day before I started really enjoying full bodied cigars consistently.
