Root cana, ouch...

Hi all, I had to have a root canal this morning, suddenly, and right now my mouth feels better, but not 100%. This may sound like a dumb question but do I need to wait a certain amount of time before smoking? I'm guessing not as long as I am comfortable. I'm definitely ready for some whiskey and a smoke after 2 days of excruciating pain.

p.s. I just realized I mispelled canal in my title, oh well, gotta love that vicodin...

If it was a one-step procedure, you should be okay. If you have to go back to finish it up (and you have a temporary,) then you should wait.

Drinkin', smokin', and takin' pain killers

If it were me I would wait about a week or so. Reason for this is because its still a wound. Even if its closed up, there will still be tissue that has not been healed yet. To lower the risk of permanent damage I would hold off. Just my two cents!

Re: Root cana, ouch...

woah, a week? You are very conservative. A day at the most.

Dry socket is more of a concern than anything else.

Personally I smoked right after but I don't really value life or limb that much.

have had 5 myself - i'd wait a day, just for swelling to subside, etc (and as jdean notes, dry socket is the issue). question is - what will you smoke???

edit - actually, i think dry socket is an issue with extractions, not canals (have had one pulled too - yes, my teeth are a mess...)

You may be right on the extractions. I can't remember now either.
A day wait though and you should be fine. A week is crazy in my opinion.

Re: Root cana, ouch...

With a root canal, I don't see any reason to wait if you want a smoke. The opening in the tooth is sealed with a temporary filling. I would be more concerned about drinking alcohol while taking vicodin.

Re: Root cana, ouch...

I think you meant " drinking alcohol while taking acetomenophen (sp?) and/or tylenol "

And yes, vicodin has aceto in it so save your liver and do one or the other.

Re: Root cana, ouch...

I've had some done all at once...even if it's a temp filling it's closed off. Your call.

No, I said exactly what I meant. I have an old vicodin bottle from last year that has an interaction warning to not drink while taking the stuff. The PDR from 2 years ago which is the most recent that I have also has an interaction caution. I do agree with being careful with tylenol or generics.

shoot, when it says that, aren't ya supposed to drink on it?-seriously, the danger i think is that both aspirin & alcohol thin your blood-that being said, i did it for years w/no bad results other than liver trouble!

Thank the great good Lord I've only ever had one. Since you didn't get any stitches or the like I think you're fine. Give the dentist a call just to be safe

Re: Root cana, ouch...

Vicodin definitely has acetamenophene in it so thats why you can't drink with it as acetamenophene is extremely toxic to the liver (As few as 5 or 6 tylenols can shut a smaller person's liver down- even fewer when drinking) I remember from my brother having wisdom teeth out they specifically said no smoking for 7 days but root canals are probably a lot different.
