As long as it's legal to hold a firearm.

This reminds me of a true story that was in the news back when I was in college. It happened in a small town near Shawnee, Oklahoma.

A very old lady (90+-ish) grew beautiful flowers from heirloom seeds that she had inherited.

She had grown them for decades and decades.

One day the police came. They didn't arrest her.

They just cut down her Papaver somniferum plants.

She had been growing them since before they became illegal. They were really beautiful flowers, magnificent and colorful.

She didn't even know what they were.

I think most of them are grown in Afghanistan now for the market. (Opium poppies!)

Lol nice plants she had Most of the market is produced in like china and places such as that I believe.

I also planned to have 5-6 plants, now i've got 20 and I'm expecting more by the end of the week haha. They are in a small pot like 7" round so I don't know how this is going to work when I transplant them, Richard, any advice?

Leave them in the small pots until the root systems are sturdy and able to withstand a transplant. The leaf structure should be well developed just incase the new location as a few bugs. Keeping them in small pots requires closer attention on those hot days since the water in the pot can easily be consumed. If the plants are growing closely together you may need to thin them or let them grow to a size where you can untangle the delicate root system in a bucket of water and gently transplant them. Taking your time and experience will be your best teacher and remember there is always next season...

When I heard you speak of Papaver somniferum I was reminded of the Withania somnifera that I grow, also called Ashwagandha a very useful and legal Ayurvedic herb. Can be used as a nerve tonic with similar effects to prescription anti-anxiety medication. I usually prepare the dried root in a tincture of quality tequila. About a quarter to half and ounce does the job. Some refer to it as the Indian 3x5card.

Garden fun

Re: Tobacco seeds

I didn't know that Papaver Somniferum was illegal. People use the pods for arts and crafts all of the time. I suppose that is why I asked about the legality of growing tobacco. These days you never know what is illegal. I live in an apartment so growing 3 meter plants is out of the question.

In the interest of linking the tobacco growing threads I offer this photo update in my Cigar Birthing post.

Happy Gardening

Re: Tobacco seeds

Thanks for the advice Richard, I decided to thin a few of the smaller plants out so I've still got quite a few in this pot, and 2 more pots full of seeds that should be close to sprouting this week or weekend, so I'll def have pics once they come up
