Please explain the Idea of Collecting & am I smoking good choices?

Hi, As some of you might of seen me around here for a while. I have a question.

Besides from having a cigar available when your ready to smoke. What is the idea of having a collection? how long dose it last? so you can sill smoke it? And its not to old?
I understand people have their own little bar so they can allways pick somthing else to drink is it the same Idea??

I Smoked a Tin can of Griffins Cigorles, it took 2 weeks then a Bacaarat Lucadoras, a Davidoff 2000. Last night I found a diffrent Shop in Brookyn the guy talked me in to a Avo No.2 I smoked that last night, and left the shop with "Cibinet series PERDOMO RESERVE LA TRADICION "
Do I sound like a pro Am I on the right track????

I'm going to the Davidoff shop tommorow I'm thinking of picking up another Davidoff 2000, dose any one have any ideas for me to try ????? from thier store???? I allways ask for mild cigars. I feel like an addict allways think when I'm going to smole my next one.

Jack

Well having a collection ensures you'll always have some good smokes on hand. Some smokes just get better with age. Anejos. Opus, some Pepins, Tats, etc.. Many aged smokes are prized if done properly and can still be good even 20 years from now or even better than now. This only applies if the smoke has potential to be aged of course.

If you like mild smokes try out CAO Black or Torano 1916s.

When you go to the store to buy beer, do you always buy the same brand? and do they always have what you want, that particular trip?
You know if you really like a brand of beer and bought a master case, you'd save lots of money, right?
Well, when I feel like having a particular cigar, I go to my 'dor and pick it out. I don't have to drive to the B&M, hope they have what I feel like and pay extra for the luxury of just buying one.
Plus, many get better as they age, it's cheaper to buy in bulk and I like getting packages which aren't bills in the mail.

I think that covers it

Re: Please explain the Idea of Collecting & am I smoking good choices?

to me the idea of having a collection is so that i can have what cigar i want when i want to have it-i got tired of running to the B&M when i wanted a smoke, & 1/2 the time they were closed (11pm)-how long the collection lasts depends on how often you smoke-if you have a full 50ct humi & smoke one a week, you don't have to worry about them getting too old-i'd recommend getting a small humi (50ct, may seem huge now but it won't fairly soon!), going to your B&M & asking for recommendations for a new smoker-you can find threads here about it too-stick some smokes you want to try in the humi, & as you find out some you like, pick up 5pks off the net-i wouldn't buy a box for the 1st year, too many to try & tastes change too quickly-pretty soon you'll end up w/a cabinet humi & 3 coolers full-as far as mild sticks to try: cao gold, don lino colorado, fonseca, ashton classic, fuente in the conn. wrapper, 5 vegas gold, chateau real, rocky patel conn., perdomo champagne are a few that come to mind-hope this helps

If properly cared for cigars will last a long time and age well. There are boxes of cigars from the 50's on up that get auctioned off for thousands of dollars and sometimes per cigar...mainly Pre- Embargo Cuban cigars...
Sounds like you are on the right track too...

Collecting and aging ?

Its a hobby or a passion ?

For me its a hobby and a passion. I collect and age cigars. I like smoking a fine cigar with at least 4-5 years age on it and to do that it takes time, space, money and self control.

I have cigars for in the morning with coffee. Cigars for after dinner, cigars for barbeques and ones for when you only have 30 minutes. I also have some for when I am doing yard work or golfing or just taking care of the pool. The variety is endless. But when you find what you like you will know it. Then you will start collecting and aging.

A cigar only gets better with age. Just remember a dog rocket will always be a dog rocket aged or not.

Re: Please explain the Idea of Collecting & am I smoking good choices?

There's so much more to the appreciation of cigars than the mere smoking. You'll find that this is a genuine hobby, with discussions about the merits of sizes, shapes, blends, years of production; ad infinitum. The average gorilla here knows about the qualities of certain tobacco strains, the differences in taste among Nicaraguan or Honduran or Costa Rican tobacco...and has the sense that there's so much more to learn! It's akin to the appreciation of fine wine or fast cars! (I'd say fast women, but my wife may be reading). There is nothing wrong with finding one brand and sticking with it, but I suspect that you'll find that there are limitless possibilites in the appreciation of premium cigars. Enjoy the ride!

Re: Please explain the Idea of Collecting & am I smoking good choices?

A Newbie's perspective on this and I am sure many of you can remember back to the day, is that every cigar I buy it is almost 50/50 to me, between wanting to smoke it and also wanting to get it in my humi and know it is there.

This is the "troubling" part of the slope that I am learning to love. It is almost like, well wait, it is exactly like when I used to collect Baseball/Football cards. Every time I buy a cigar that is new to me I am excited just to have it, yet alone smoke it!

I know for a FACT, that I will be a big collector as well as smoker. And I am just fine with that. Now I am starting to buy multiple of everything so that I can have one now and then let one be all happy in the humi.

I can't wait to look back 3 or 4 years from now and remember, "I got this one in Denver at a B&M, this was one in my first batch from Cbid, my Wife got me one of these................."

I have a problem. Acceptance is the first step I hear though.

Jack, buy what takes your fancy and smoke it. I think there are certianly people who can go buy the stick they want when it takes thier fancy to do so but I sadly am not that guy. Hell there are times I go to the B&M to buy a stick I already own so I can't fault anyone on that front.
