How did you go about collecting?

I am wondering how you ladies and gents went about collecting your cigars. I see from the bombs and such that there seems to be a lot of nice collections out there. It seems, I have a problem hanging on to a large collection. I like to smoke at least one a day usually two. I also like to give cigars to BOTL's. I just like being generous for the sake of being generous. How do you all balance your keeping and giving. I love giving, and being a part of the PIF movement so to say, but I don't want to get into a situation where I have to buy cigars to keep up with my giving/trading. Any suggestions? I also am just curious how you got started and maintain.

Thanks!

Simple. Buy much more than you can smoke then buy some more.

Re: How did you go about collecting?

Well... it all started with a box of Honduran Churchill puros my wife brought back for me from a mission trip she took to Honduras. She did it completely on a whim... because I had probably smoked a grand total of 7 cigars up to that point during our 22 years of marriage. That was in July 2006.

She got home... I set them aside for a couple of weeks and decided I needed to do something with/for them. Didn't think it was good to just let them sit around... Soooooooooo... I got on the internet and googled "cigars." Went to a website called http://cigars.about.com/ that had a lot of info and got me looking at different cigars.

Then, I found JR's in Selma and freaked out! Bought 8 cigars and a 15 count humidor 'cuz that would take care of all I would ever need. Then I found Club Stogie back in Oct. 2006...

I now have a 60 qt coolerdor FULL... another 150 humi... a 30 ct travel humi... and two tupperdors with about 50 each in them. Slope? What slope? It was a freakin' drop from an airplane without a parachute!

Maybe I should have gotten the cigars first. I have my 74 qt. coolerdor, with ten trays total. 3.5 of those are full. i keep looking at the empty trays wondering how in the world will I afford to fill this thing up. I think I need therapy. I have had a couple nightmares about this. LOL!
But seriously, do I need therapy?

Re: How did you go about collecting?

know people who know people who have old suff...

buy your current production stuff, and search for 5-10 years stuff...

when u find the 5-8 year stuff, smoke that while your current production stuff begins to age, and search for the 10-15 year old stuff...

when u find the 10-15 year old stuff, smoke that while your current and 5-8 year old stuff ages more...

and so on and so on... that what i call the vicious cycle...

that what others have told me... (im still in the current production stuff)

tell me when u start hunting for that rare and ultra rare stuff i need a hook up

Re: How did you go about collecting?

It starts with a few cigars that need storing. Maybe 10 or so.

While researching you happen upon a couple of websites or message boards where everyone talks about a few conerstrone cigars like the Padron or A. Fuente or whatever.

You head to your local B&M and buy a couple of singles of the ones you heard about. While your 10 starter cigars are sitting at home in a tupperware container.

You bring home the new smokes and light one up and sooner or later you're in LOVE.

Suddenly, you're buying at least a box of your first love and you're sure that this will be your one and only.

Soon, your eye starts to wonder and you find a cute little stogie that just has a quirky little something to her that you really enjoy and before you know it you have a box of those too.

Now you have two boxes of your two loves and you realize that it's relatively inexpensive to buy a cooler.

Now you have your two boxes and your starter 10 sitting in a cooler so you start thinking about how few cigars you have compared to that "giant" cooler.

At this point you have reached the slope and once you hear about cbid it's all over.

Then you overspend and realize you could try a lot more cigars if you started trading and participating in box pass'...

So, between all of the above sources and a "mania" that overtakes us all, you start filling cooler after cooler.

I'm playing tetris with my first cooler, have my regulars in a 100 count humi, and have some plugged sicks sitting in a second cooler because I'm giving them more humidity than the first cooler. All the while I'm doing this
