Re: Cigarmony Hygrometers (Any Thoughts?)

Other than the two analog units that came with my humis, I purchased a Hygro-Set Adjustable Digital Hygrometer from Cbid. I don't care much for the adjustment knob because sometimes, one click will make a 10% RH difference and other times, one click makes a 1% RH difference. I had a heck of a time getting it to 74% RH using the salt test, I tried for days on and off repeatedly trying, but never could get to read 75%.

I have since purchased two Western Caliber III Digital Hygrometers and really like them. But, FWIW when placed in the same humidor, they vary by 2% RH. I decided that 1-5% RH, for my cigars, would not be worth the concern, especially since I'm using a Puck from Cigarmony in one humi and a Madeline Crystal humidifier in the other. I plan to replace the Crystals with another Puck eventually.

Both of them have been completely accurate out of the box and no it can't be calibrated.
Look at the #'s on the base and sensor in the 2nd pic. I took the sensor out right before the pic from the 100ct humi right behind them. Compare the sensor and the left column(sensor) on the gray base.
The 1%rh difference is bottom/top of the humi and a 0.7 temp difference. I'm also testing a 3rd one that just came in today

At this time this is best deal on anything designed by Philippe Starck wish some of his Alessi stuff would go on sale hehe

Re: Cigarmony Hygrometers (Any Thoughts?)

Ok guys, I pulled the trigger just now on the OS Stark Medium Music Clock as per Gizzy's recommendation. The webthx07 promotion code still worked and covered the shipping just like he said it would.

As a side note they are out of the additional sensors but I put in for the notification for re-stock so I am hopeful.

Thanks guys for all the good info.

Are you serious? I guess if you did not enter the "webthx07" as the coupon code and see the $10.00 discount then you musta missed it :-(

Base uses 4 AA and the sensor uses 2 AAA but it also comes with an AC adapter for the base ( I Highly recommend Sanyo Eneloops the best rechargeables out on the market they are low self discharge!)

So here's the pic of the trio my old grey Large, and new yellow medium and the sensor
I ordered one of these units and have been using it for about a week. It is DEAD ON accurate. For 20 bucks shipped this is a great deal.

I just ordered 2 more as gifts. Thanks for the link and the coupon code!!

Re: Cigarmony Hygrometers (Any Thoughts?)

Why does it take 24-36 hours for the new hygrometer to get a correct reading with the Boveda calibration pack?

I am having the same problem ChokeonSmoke did. Mine is double bagged and after 18 hours, mine is reading 68%.

Mark: I just looked on your site for western digital hygrometers and couldn't find any. Are you out? Thanks! Greg

What type of digital hygrometer are you using? Is it a Western Digital or an adjustable model?

Also, was the boveda kit purchased new?

If I am not mistaken, when you calibrate the adjustable ones, you have to do it multiple times. So you leave them in the bag, adjust and repeat until it is correct. Also, you might want to check whether or not you have to recalibrate them every time you change the battery.

I think the calibration kit says it will last 6 months once opened. I actually recommend the kit over the salt test. Although the salt test seems brainless, from my experience, the amount of water you add to the salt is important. The boveda kit is actually a little ghetto, it is just a small 75% boveda packet in a small ziplock bag, but it does work.

www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=74363

I just looked at my Boveda calibration kit and it states,"The Humidipak One-Step Calibration Kit is guaranteed to be accurate for up to 3 months after opening. It is recommended to retest each hygrometer every six months." FWIW

The digital hygrometer is a Madelaine adjustable purchased at a local B&M. The Boveda kit was purchased new.

OK - I have no clue when it comes to the adjustable ones. In that case, it could be -7F and just needs to be adjusted.

From my experience with the Western Digital Caliber IIIs, they need a little time before they start reading accurately (12-24 hours), but these are not adjustable.

Just a few weeks ago, I salt tested my 5 year old Radio Shack hygrometer. It came back at 72%. No problem, I just "add 3%" when I look at it. So I got the Western III a few day ago and salt tested it. I figured I'd throw the Radio Shack hygro in there too just to make sure it was consistent from the last test. Well, this time it came out dead on at 75%. In other words, the results were 3% different from 3 weeks ago. Now maybe this isn't a HUGE deal but it doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence in the test. Maybe I should just relax and say "close enough?", I don't know.

I checked it at 24 hours AND at 36 hours and it read 68%. I had it triple bagged in ziplocks. The table salt/water mixture I created was wet, yet I could turn the cap upside down and nothing fell out.

Does anyone see anything wrong in the way I performed the test?

I tried the "salt test" also and had artificially low readings. Bought 4 HygroSet adjustable digital hygrometers from David at www.heartfeltindustries.com with the Boveda kits. All 4 were spot on after adjustments post storing for 48 hours in the Boveda kit. The kit is accurate for 3 months after opening, so you can re-test each hygrometer multiple times if you wish. Also, you can place up to 4 hygrometers at one time in each kit, so you only have to purchase one kit. I like the round hygrometers better, They're more compact. Also if you purchase the kit with a HygroSet, you save $2 off the kit price. I love all 4 of mine. All 4 are dead even with each other after 1 month!
