La Finca - Opinions?

I just came across this cigar and the reviews that I've read on Top 25 see to be quite good. But, when I checked it out on the CA Forums they ripped the hell out of it. The price is great at about $40 per box but I am always apprehensive about prices that low.

So...

has anyone had any experience with this particular cigar? I lean more towards the Robusto size sticks

I consider them yard gars. They've been around a long time, they're usually well constructed and they taste OK. Plus they're not expensive.

When I looked at La Finca, I also looked at a brand called Villar & Villar, which are often featured by the same retailers who sell La Finca. Now the V&V is a cigar I'd advise you to stay far away from. But the LF isn't horrible.

They're just a shade above dog rockets, in my opinion, and exceptionally spicy.

I like them OK. Something to puff behind the lawn mower. I personally don't think of them as dog rockets... not a FFOX, but hard to beat for the $$$.

(I must spread more ring gauge before giving it to you again)

There are still some true LLGs on this board!! I gotta say some of the cigar snobbery around here as of late is making my ass itch. Especially when it is directed at my beloved La Fincas!

I went maybe 3 years in the late 90s smoking only La Finca Coronas. The boom was at its peak and any brand you could count to be consistant was drastically overpriced if it was on store shelves. The La Fincas on the other hand were $25 - $35 a box retail. Unfortunately the cigar got a rediculously high rating in CA in 1998 I believe, and then even this cigar shot up to $75 a box.

The plus of the cigar is its consistancy, so if you find that you like them each box will be the same. The cigar is decent and consistant. With 2 - 3 years aging I would call them good. Currently there are better cigars to be had for the same money but they are decent smokes and I have never been disappointed with one.

Yup, I smoked a ton of these during the boom. Haven't had one in a few years. If you can rest them for a bit, pretty good.

(EDIT this is only online see below) If you are near the city in NY you might want to wander into the Davidoff Madison store.

They are closing out OneOff cigars at half price - including the "Tres Sigari" line. These are $5 for 3 sticks right now; $40 will get you 24 of the Tres Sigari sticks which I think are considerably better. If you aren't close shipping and handling is only $6 and come by FedEx from them.

Two others in that price range that I would recommend:

Fumadores by Pepin Garcia and Holt's Big League. Both of these are available at Holt's and their shipping rates are also very fair.

Check out the cheap smokes thread linked in my signature for more suggestions. There are MANY very good cigars that can be had for less than $40 a box. Don't listen to cigar snobs as diminishing returns really do come into factor with cigars. I still do buy pricey cigars on occasion; but most of my cigars are $3 and under sticks as the $10 smokes are in no way 3 times as good.

I posted this in the other thread in the retail section, I was just in that store, it's across the street from me, and the guy told me internet only. Perhaps I talked to the wrong guy, but I wouldn't want anyone to make a wasted trip.

Just in case you aren't aware, most La Fincas are long filler..

In any brand the Cazadore will usually be a sandwich.

Re: La Finca - Opinions?

I had one yesterday and they are not very good. They are constructed nicely and actually look pretty good as well (burn well with nice smoke). But they have a raw, acidic and harsh flavor right from the start that is consistent all the way through to the end of the cigar. It does mellow out a bit but overall but I would only give this cigar a rating in the low 70's or a C minus.
