When I first joined CS almost 10 months ago, I had been smoking cigars for over 10 years. I had one 75-100ct humidor, and thought that having it "half full" was enough for me. I wondered if some of the apes keeping large locker-style humidors or multiple coolers worth of cigars were insane. However, over the months, I have been enlightened a bit. I have started stocking up as well, and I can reasonably weather any changes in the cigar industry for at least two years. Here are four great reasons why you should consider stocking up on cigars NOW if you have not in the past, and I am sure many of my fellow BOTL's will agree:
1 - BAD Legislation. The recent tax issue for "state provided child health insurance" (never mind that everyone is already insured by medicaid) should provide undeniable proof that others will continue to meddle in our hobby for political gain, no matter how folly it may be. Cigars will only get more expensive over time. Get them cheap now. 2 - Inflation. Our friends at the Federal Reserve continue to churn out dollar bills at an unprecedented rate. This has caused prices to rise almost everywhere, and is one of the reasons why gas is 3.50/gallon (it is not refinery capacity - if that was the case we would be out of gas!). Inflation is bound to hit the cigar market more in the long term as the dollar sags against other currencies. Ask some of the Northerners on CS about this! 3 - Aged cigars are simply better. This is taken as religion around here. I dont know of any cigars that get worse with age (other than a Cremosa, Tamboril, or their ilk). Most get better - some much better. Others will just stay the same. Either way, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain. So there are a few boxes that arent openend for years? Great, they will taste better than when they were purchased! 4 - Technology. Right now, we may be able to look "elsewhere" for cigars, whether that is for tax avoidance or desire to acquire certain brands. Either way, as payment processing and tracking technology advances, it will be easier for the feds to bill for taxes due - especially on cigars. If one already has enough smokes, problem solved! Im sure there are other reasons out there for stocking up - lets hear 'em! |

Re: Reasons why it makes sense to "stock up"
Well, I agree with all of your points except for some of #2. Gas prices are not high just because of inflation but a variety of other factors including greedy oil corporations, the price of oil, world political situations, increasing demand and varying refining capacity. There has not been a new refinery built in the US since the 1960's and the ones we do have are taken down regularly for maintenance.

Re: Reasons why it makes sense to "stock up"
Points #2,#3,and #4 are relevant for all times and in the future regarding cigars.
Any product which you can stock up on, be it cigars, toilet paper, trash bags you can buy at cheap prices and have room to keep you should buy as much of it as you can. It's called being frugal and a smart shopper. I agree, NOW is the time to stock up on your favorite cigars. This bill will be vetoed by the president if it even makes it that far, but I can almost guarantee that the bill be be reworked and the tax on nicotine reduced, but still be a considerable amount (25% price increase instead of the proposed 53%). In negotiations, you always start out high and come down from that. You never start low and work up. -T2 |

You mean... BESIDES my Obsessive/Compulsive behavior, lack of self control around cigars, and my ability to leave a pile of cash at the local B&M with almost no remorse?!

Re: Reasons why it makes sense to "stock up"
I think all points are pretty good, but the one factor that says do not stock up to me is:
I don't have enough money.

Re: Reasons why it makes sense to "stock up"
I'm not stocking up myself. I'm pretty well stocked at the moment with a few more boxes coming. Besides even with the outrageous tax increase I'd probably still smoke if I could find sticks I liked enough for the new price points.

Calling that thing a "shirt" is a stretch, don't you think?

Re: Reasons why it makes sense to "stock up"
I have said, and will say again, that there are members of our legislatures, be they local, state or federal, who wish to legislate tobacco use out of existance. We are a small and demonized minority and the public at large seems to applaud further restrictions on our rights rather than decry our loss of freedom. There's an old adage: "In times of plenty, prepare for times of need".
