I have owned monkeys most of my live and my last one was a capuchin female .Got her when she was a baby and bottle fed her. she lived with me for 26 years and I enjoyed the experience . But no I would not recommend one to most people. The males will get very aggressive and moody when they maturity and their mood swings can be dangerous with fangs that can give you very bad wounds . Most of the bigger monkeys will live for 20 to 35 years and they zoo will not take them if they out live their owners or they get to much for the person to handle. when you havee one it is like having a 3 year old for ener 24 hours a day . and you can not trust them with friends when you want to go off for a trip.They will only behave for their owners
People who sell them will only tell you the good things and play down the truth.

Had friends growing up who had one. It's name was Cheetah. I remember it being a pretty cool pet, but also real high maintenance. It ran away one day - swinging through the trees of Collingswood, NJ,

I think most people have the "cute little monkey eating nuts and fruits" perspective . . . but if you ever watch the Discovery channel or National Geographic shows and see them gang up and tear into each other or another animal - you'll get a whole different outlook on these little flesh eating fur balls.

In Thailand, some bars keep a cute little monkey chained to the bar. Usually, they are just cute, you give them a couple pretzels or nuts and they are no problem. Start messing with them though, and they can be trouble. More than a few of my shipmates have been bitten. Ears, fingers, noses, you name it. One particularly drunk sailor unzipped his shorts and posed for a picture with a cute little monkey in a dress. Let's just say he won't be making THAT mistake again!
 Much worse than little monkeys are adult chimpanzees. Those things can tear you up!.

When I was a kid our neighbor had a pet monkey that used to get loose, climb into our cherry trees, eat until he made himself sick, then hurl all over our car. Fun times.
He also used to swing along the telephone wires and taunt the other neighbor's two Irish Setters. One day he lost his grip and fell right on the dogs who proceeded to tear him into tiny pieces. It was a particularly grisly little crime scene I must say. So no, I've never wanted a pet monkey. |
