Re: Getting rid of Yellow Jackets?

Well, tonight was a little cooler than expected and we had rain all day so i decided to make my move on the hive.

I got all geared up
Long Pants
Sweatshirt (with the cigarmany "Got Puros" lettering on front", for effect of coarse)
Boots with heavy socks pulled up over my pant legs
Gloves tucked over the sleeves of my sweatshirt
"Punch" brand hat (on backwards, for more effect)

I creeped over to the hive with a Yuengling black and tan bottle of gasoline in hand. I shined the flashlight on the hive to get my bearing and I jambed the bottle in the Ivy.

I waited a second to make sure I hit the mark and saw a yellow jacket take flight. I figured I hit the mark so I turned and trotted across the lawn, laughing in an evil sort of way. All of a sudden my hat flies off and I feel a sting on my forehead (It wasn't the yellow Jackets, I walked straight into a clothesline that I forgot that I put up temporarily the day before). I collected myself, grabbed my hat and headed inside the house.

I turned on the outside lights and peered out the window to see if I could see if any Yellow Jackets got away. After a few minutes I started second guessing myself and headed back outside to check the bottle. I was a little off target but I think it did the trick. To make sure I headed back inside and made another empty bottle (tonight was recycling night and I was fresh out of empty bottles)

Once I had an empty I filled it with gas and went back outside for a second dose. I pulled the first bottle out and got down in the ivy to make sure this bottle went as far down in the hole as possible. After inserting the bottle I calmly walked away (remembering to duck under the clothesline). Grabbed myself a celebratory Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic and here I sit.

I'll know for sure tomorrow afternoon just how effective the gas was. Hopefully it did the trick and all will be well.

A note to anyone who finds themselves in need of killing Yellow Jackets. It really isn't bad at all. I quickly learned that I probably could have done the job in Shorts and Slippers (although I wouldn't advise it) and wouldn't have been stung. The gas seemed to kill them instantly and nothing came back out of the hole in the ground. The single yellow jacket I saw was probably a guard that was on the outside of the hole and got away.

It certainly was not the swarm of death that I got geared up for and was expecting.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I really appreciate it!

You can kill a lot of things with sub-par beer. Yuengling is very scary to a hornet - that was a good idea. So you didn't have to waste any precious gasoline, then? A few may have survived but I've heard if you just walk out in the yard with a bottle that sez "Iron City" on it, all hornets will drop dead when they spot the label.

Sidebar: when I lived in Detroit I used Strohs to kill troublesome weeds, flying insects and the Renegades M/C biker-dude next door. One bottle for a wasps nest and no more than a six-pack for a 250-pound guy (net of chains).

Congrats on your success - loved the clothesline drama part.

No need to wait and wonder. One lit match will light up the hole enough to get a good look.
