Re: Question for the fishermen......

I think using barbless hooks is more predominant of a practice with fly-fishers than rod n reel anglers on the gulf coast. Most fly anglers I know will keep a few fish but catch and release most of the freshwater trout and other fish they catch. Most anglers in Louisiana, for example, keep anything that is legal to catch up to the generous limit we have of 25 speckled sea trout.

Cut it off - keep fishing - go to ER when done

I lose very few fish. I generally give the fish some slack hoping they'll get themselves off. I keep a few fish, generally small brookies. (I'm fly fishing)

I've been pinching barbs for years even when I used to spin fish with lures, especially lures with lots of hooks. An old fisherman I knew did this and showed me his scars and told me how much it hurt. That convinced me. I even went so far to cut two barbs off each treble hook for and aft on some lures just to see what happened. (I sure wish I had some of those old lures with the original boxes. Hula Poppers, Jiggerbugs, those were the days

Get a wire cutters and antiseptics. Don't push the hook back into your skin/flesh. Push it out, cut the barb off, and remove. Get some antiseptic on it and see your doctor asap, emergency room if you dare.
