How painful and how long will I be out.

I've had one, it was not painful. It was not comfortable by any means, but it did not hurt. They give you enough lidocain where you don't feel the pain and stuff. You should be fine in a day or so after.

Out? They don't put you out.

I had one, but I'm a pussy so they gave me gas (NO2, I think) along with the local anesthetic.

They put me out for my wisdom teeth, but not for a root canal.

Yeah, good luck with being put out. Unless you've got some really good insurance or some other driving medical need, doubt you'll be knocked out for the procedure. Some local stuff, but it's all good. Shouldn't feel any pain, maybe just some pressure. A bit uncomfortable on the jaw, but other than that, just battling the boredom. Bring your iPod or portable DVD player or something else to watch/listen to. Like the Snickers commercial, you're "not going anywhere for a while..."

Oh, yeah, me too. I insisted. Brevitol (sp?).

He told me to count down from 10 and I think I made it to 7.

I wouldn't let them do it unless they knocked me out....maybe I watched "Marathon Man" too many times.

I had one and while it wasn't fun, it wasn't as bad as my "friends" said it would be, and it was nowhere near as bad as the pain that made me agree to it. I didn't think too much of the files though...

The Major (my doc) came over with a handful of syringes and I asked her what they were for and she said "this is for you, it's the good stuff". She grabbed my IV and said count down from 10, I don't remember saying 8. I woke up a few hours later.

I had one done a couple months ago and compared to the pain I was enduring with the cracked tooth for 3 weeks, it was a walk in the park. Local anestesia, not knocked out and the idiot dentist kept talking to me through the whole thing.

It really depends. Do you have to go to an endodontist? How many "roots" are there in this tooth? Does the tooth hurt right now? Keep in mind that it will probably take two to three visits to complete.

I had one in college and it was not pleasant...however, the tooth hurt so badly that the root canal itself was actually a relief from the pain. You should not sweat it too much.
