I'd put up a rofl smilie it it didn't make me so sad. Missed ya Sean.

This was one of those.. know the answer b4 you ask the question type of polls. Initial guess was 9:1. Looks more like 3:1 but you know about voter turnout being only 50% and I figure they all would fall into the no category.

There had been some communication from members about potentially having a Politics forum. This has come up before and PDS had made his views clear in the past. There is a new sticky on the subject if you want to read the specifics.

Put this up for one simple reason, those that like to have these threads need to understand that they are a non-mainstream part of CS of which there are many other examples... coffee, entertainment etc. The difference is the "fallout factor". This is a friendly place and to the extent these discussions happen occasionally those that like to participate need to remember the "friendly" aspect of it. It's one of the coolest most consistent things that I like about what Paul has done here and falls under the lets have a diverse and vibrant community that supports a wide range of things on what is ostensibly a cigar board, with the one caveat... "don't be a d!ck". Political discussions seem to confuse some when it comes to this one simple rule.

Re: Political Threads? Add value or create noise.

For the most part, I find them quite entertaining, and sometimes very interesting. There are several strongly opinionated members of this board, from both sides of the "aisle", that have a real talent for posting logical and interesting thoughts. Many times have I been surprised by a point of view I would have considered foolish before reading their post.
Sometimes the threads do go south, but if everyone would stop posting on them how "these threads go south", then things might go a bit smoother.
Heck...I am not exactly a posting machine, so not sure what my opinion is worth around here.

Re: Political Threads? Add value or create noise.

I don't mind an exchange of views now and again. I like them better when people stick to arguments which can be backed up by facts, and as far as possible leave out the spin, distortions, and fabrications (unless they're really funny).

There are several people who seem to be constitutionally unable to leave their political opinions at the door (I'm sure we could all come up with a short list of people, although the lists might not be the same).

Anyway, what's the alternative?

Should every comment be examined for political correctness? Should repeat offenders be banned? That doesn't sound like the Club Stogie I've come to love.

If you don't enjoy a political discussion, there's no reason you should take part. Otherwise, here are a few tips I've found useful which I offer here on a "do as I say, not as I do" basis: try not to take it too seriously, take a break between posts, stick to discussing ideas and events and avoid commenting on the personal, educational, and grammatical shortcomings of people whose views are at variance with your own.

Re: Political Threads? Add value or create noise.

I think that they can be of value. If people don't enter a thread looking for a fight and conduct themselves as adults and stay away from attacking anyone posting they can create lively debate. My vot would be to keep them available and if someone crosses the line of propriety - I would suggest the moderator address that person directly, or if the thread dergades past the original intent, then close the thread for a stated reason. If you call it on a case by case basis I think that there can still be room for discussion. We're all adults here and should be able to control ourself approriately during ANY duscussion whether it be political, religious or about our favorite cigar. Just my
