Post Re: Has anybody ever started a Tiger Cub Scout group?

I haven't started one, my son is a few years away and have been thinking the same thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and know I learned most of my values and skills from them.

Contact your local BSA office(link below), they will have all the information you need. Florida has always had a great program and I enjoyed camping and meeting the guys from FL. We were always jealous because they got the go scuba diving, but they were jealous of us because we camped every month in the Tetons.

Your son will love it, keep him active in it, and push him to get the Eagle Scout. He will never regret it and the memories you two create together will be cherished by both of you forever......

Radar, you'll enjoy it, go for it for sure. Your kid and the tigers will remember it for a life time. I was a Tiger , Weblos and Boy Scout leader for my two boys. Just remember, time is what you need. Call the locl Boy Scout Council and they should get you going in the right direction, of course after your background check. Tiger Scouts usally meet once a month at a different locations. This can be a house, Ball Game, Hockey Game Skating Rink. "Get" the parents involved. Call your son's school and they usually have a program with scouts. If they don't, they will when you become a leader Good luck. I still run into some of my scouts from 8 years ago and they still remember all the things we did. Built wooden tool boxes, Fished, skating. Just remember that a lot of the kid's in scouts don't have fathers that are involved, and you will become that "other father figure". Sad but true. Go for it, you'll enjoy it and your son and the other boys will always remember it, Good Luck, Don

Been a Scout leader for 23 years now. Everthing P-Town says is right on. I hate to admit it but next year I will have a couple kids joining our Troop that are the sons of some of my original Scouts. I also still run into a lot of my Scouts and they always talk about the good times they had. You'll never regret the time you devote to your son and the other boys.

Re: Has anybody ever started a Tiger Cub Scout group?

I was a Tiger Cub, I started in Cub Scouts when I was 6 years old. I stayed with it, and with the encouragement of my parents and the other leaders I made it all the way through Cub Scouts, got my Arrow of Light (The highest honor for Cub Scouts) Made it through Boy Scouts and got my Eagle Scout. (The Highest honor for a Boy Scout) I learned more valuable knowledge than I ever thought possible, it taught me how to be a good man, and most of all, I learned how to cook! Hahaha. But really, if you keep your little guy active and just do some research and learn with him you 'll be fine. That's what my dad did when I started. He had no idea what to do. He just stepped in one day because the leader that was supposed to do it never showed up and he was the Cubmaster before you know it. Just teach them everyday things like saftey around fire, how to use a screwdriver, safety around shrap objects and poisons and stuff like that. I remember doing the Pinewood derby and having my dad help me out in the workshop to make a car that eventually ended up winning 2 place at our statewide competition. Get the Cub scout handbook. Teach them about the values and stuff that it lays out in there. Take em out and teach them how to fish or something. The Cub Scouts is really more about learning then adventure but you can have adventure while you learn if you do it right. Nothing to adventurous though, they are still little guys. If you want I can send you a big long email of things that I remember doing as a Tiger Cub. Just let me know, send me a PM ot something.

Re: Has anybody ever started a Tiger Cub Scout group?

I was a cub scout and it was a VERY rewarding time in childhood. Do it Radar... you will someday be amazed that you even bothered to spend time "considering" it.

You are going to have so much fun and you will be someone and part of something that our children of this nation need so dearly.

BTW, don't start them on ISOM's right away... remember they are young kids and cannot afford that kind of habit yet

Seriously.... go for it and THANK YOU in advance for doing it!!

Aww thanks guys, hey, I don't deserve RG for that, just doin my part to help a fellow BOTL out. Thanks.

And another thing to you Radar, I still remember the look on my parents face when they awarded me the rank of Eagle Scout. It's something neither I nor they will ever forget. I know thats a ways down the road and alot can happen between now and then. But if you get into it and love it, it's the most awesome experience you can ever have (except of course smoking a nice ISOM with your boy the day he gets married, graduates from college, etc.) Good luck, and really, if you need any suggestions or tips or just wanna talk about scouts, I'd be more than happy.

Re: Has anybody ever started a Tiger Cub Scout group?

Thanks for all the input. Ninja, Wow, very cool post. I had been to the national website and the website for the Local Council before I posted. The local office is near a field trip I'm taking with him Friday, so I plan to stop in on the way home and get whatever literature and handbooks I'll need. It's pretty much a done deal, I just want to be ready to get things started when classes start in August. We signed up for Flag Football starting in August last night. We've done Tee Ball for two seasons together now and Soccer for one. We both love the time we put into this stuff. I'd love an email from you Ninja with a list of the things you found most memorable at that age. I'm thinking ball games, we have a minor league team here, and field trip to the fire department, post office, nature center, etc.. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Gary

Re: Has anybody ever started a Tiger Cub Scout group?

Oh, hell yah! One time, I was camping in the woods and those little buggers were right down the path from me, so I put on a hockey mask and grabbed a hatchet and ran down there and they started screamin' and....

Oh, started??

I thought it said startled.

Nevermind.
