i haven't followed this "limbaugh smear letter" issue at all, don't care to.

was the soldier IN the military when he made the remarks against the president? i don't know what he said, or they... but if i recall, while i was in, the oath you take when you enlist says something about "I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice."
i've also heard of soldiers having UCMJ action taken against them if they publicly criticize their officers or the president. that's been a long time ago, and i may be wrong... i do know a Major friend of mine had to tell someone online if they didn't zip their lip that they'd face UCMJ action (that was a football board last year). so, eh, i guess it still happens. i don't know exactly what article under UCMJ it would be though.

My life experience falls in line with yours, I believe there are articles in the UCMJ that would allow you to be punished for criticizing a ranking officer which would include the president of the united states. I think you could in the most generic terms criticize the war effort "we shouldn't be here" kind of thing but not the president directly.

i was since PM'ed and told that the person failed boot camp, then went around parading as an ex-Iraq war vet, a Ranger to boot??

my bunkmate in basic couldn't hang with it. went to the chaplain many times. jumped off the 2nd floor fire escape, broke his foot, got out.
a week before i graduated basic, i got a letter from him, asking me to pick up a copy of the basic training "yearbook" and send it to him.
whatever. dude quit within 5 minutes of getting off that bus.

addiction, yep, i just can't remember what the charge is exactly. not a big deal, i won't lose a wink of sleep over this entire "smear" mess anyway.

That was the headline most of the news organizations carried when the story of MacBeth's arrest was published on 5/20.

For all those who are having a coronary of Rush's pluralization of "phony soldiers", here are some examples of other phony soldiers that Rush may have been talking about (that if he even pluralized "soldiers" intentionally).

One of the funniest things about all this, is that Harry Reid is now trying to take credit for this, as if sending that letter was some sort of calculated publicity stunt on behalf of himself to raise the money.

In the original thread on this topic, I posted Reid's speech on the floor about how great this letter/auction has been.

There have been many "phony" soldiers. This particular one just happened to be lucky enough to get caught up in the smear and auction. He was tried and convicted...and IIRC he only got probation because the sentence is related to how much money he steals from the veterans' services...he was not as successful as the others who got jail time.

I served 5 years in the United States Marine Corp and during the first desert storm and I've been listen to Rush on and off for about 16 years. The man loves the military, all branches. This whole issue is a red herring thrown out by the hard left too try to discredit Rush. It's a joke to anyone who has any knowledge of who Rush is and what he is about. I don't claim to have a lot of love for guys that come back from the War and try to undermine the war effort. (which is a tiny percentage of the people that have serve over there and most of them, in my view, are self serving) With that said I would never call any who truely served in a war zone a phoney Soldier or Marine and neither did Rush. Media Matters is a hard left extreme organization which will twist anything for politcal gain. I applaud Rush for taking the high road and putting that letter up on ebay and I'm glad some good came from it. 4.2 million Dollars for a wonderful organization.
