I. Guess what, they are “our boys”. They always have been and they always will be, no matter who uses the very general term "our boys". Using that term of endearment for our troops has nothing to do with the overt disingenuousness you are implying. So the point of your post is that those serving in Iraq and the military are liberals, is that right??

BTW, how many on the “far left” do you know that are clamoring to get in on the war effort? I have never met one “far left” liberal in the military, and only a small minority who would refer to themselves as liberal or democrats. So to counter your implication, I contend (IMO) the very wide majority who are serving right now to defend your freedoms are conservative in their politics and mindset (YMMV).

I would also caution that young airman and soldiers most often do not make a distinction between opposition comments toward the war and negative comments toward them. I encourage dissenting opinions in all matters, I only mention this as food for thought on how some of our young soldiers interpret much of this discourse.

II. As far as Rush is concerned, I don’t like his form of “shock” quasi-journalism. I don’t like some very inflammatory and nasty things he has said. He often makes some compelling points, but I don't want to wade through his provocative commentary to get to them. I do appreciate his support of the military and the money raised for a very worthy cause.

III. Something very cogent to this thread is from a legal standpoint soldiers and airman have many of their rights abridged as a pre-requisite to, and in conjunction with, their military service (ie freedom of speech, IHT and Addiction referenced this). This is something the public at large generally does not have an understanding of. Title X of the US code is the law governing the military – all facets of the military. Under subtitle A (general military law), part II (Personnel), chapter 47 is the Uniformed Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Under Punitive articles is section 888, article 88, states:

“Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

A couple nuances: 1) note it refers to commissioned officers only, 2) what will the court-martial direct is wide open.

Bottom line, any military member voicing their opposition for the war had better tread very lightly in any statement toward any elected public official. They might just find themselves subject to military justice (some say that term, in and of itself, is an oxymoron) and some unsavory results of that process.

i have a hard time making my thoughts come out like this in text... nice work, billybarue.
but i'll save you all the time of asking around - he's 100% correct. i have ran into 1 (one - that's a singular person) in my time around and in the miltary that actually said he was a democrat. there is also 1 (one - that's a singular person) that has democratic bumper stickers on his car here on post, and i believe he's never been in the military and, just on looks, seems to be some techno-geek hippy who's only here for a good paying job (just my opinion, i haven't bothered to stop and talk to him).

i just wanted to do the "" thing.

Re: Rush Limbaugh sets Ebay record

Just wanted to say thank you for the perspective you and BillyBarue bring to this discussion. I tend toward the conservative end of the spectrum myself, and I am interested in intellectual debate on various issues.

It has bothered me how differing viewpoints have been dealt with here... whether it is SeanGAR or Yamaha, they have opinions - as do we all. I found it a little odious that Yamaha's RG was dinged so severely for what I assume to be his posting of comments here. I for one enjoy thinking of Club Stogie as exactly what it is... a forum - a forum for discussion, which inherently will lead to disagreement.

You guys do what you want, but I want you to know that you don't have to worry about me dinging your RG for disagreeing with me, or taking issue with a point I may make. In my mind, that is best saved for somebody acting like an azzhat. Just my . Nothin' but love for my BOTLs - on both sides of the aisle.

Re: Rush Limbaugh sets Ebay record

My fellow BOTLs,
It was pointed out to me privately that public discussion of RG is discouraged - and I am appreciative of the effort to make me aware of that part of the culture of Club Stogie.

I apologize for my mention of that specific point in my post above. Hope you are all well, and may God bless our troops throughout the world.
I (hope I) remain your BOTL -

Re: Rush Limbaugh sets Ebay record

I think the moral of the story should be that this is truly the most "do-nothing" congress I've ever seen and is absolutely worthless. Since the liberal infestation ocurred in congress in the last elections, it's been very counterproductive, as they are too busy with things like this and trying to defy Bush, even against any of their own beliefs or beliefs of the experts on the given issues, just to prove a point. I try to steer away from polls(they are usually misguided and there's entirely too much gray area in all of them), but it's quite a statement to see that congress' approval rating is consistantly about 10 percent lower than Bush's. It's because they do crap like this. Great to see Hilary on that signature list also. Her supporters should be proud
I normally don't get into online political discussions/debates because of certain people who talk like they know something, but are entirely uneducated in politics and such, and simply know little to nothing about it, but blabber on like their opinion matters and get very defensive and agrivated/angry/intense. However, I thought I'd dealve into this one and give my 2 cents.
Cheers.

Due to the heat coming down on political threads, may I give a gentle reminder to the conservatives in this crowd to simply mutter a "par for the course" when responding to this well spoken individual...and then continue on with the regular programming.

What exactly do you suggest this current Congress do, given that it is a slim "majority" (Not that the Democratic "leadership" has shown much backbone to stand for what they say they believe if they had a larger margin)? In my opinion, the Democrats are so concerned with the upcoming election that they will not risk doing the dirty work. Out of curiosity, what do you consider the laurels the previous Congress should rest upon before the so-called "infestation"? In my opinion, the primary reason that the Congressional polls are so low is the failure to end the war.

why the vitriol for someone whom you simply disagree politically? I disagree vehemently with the Clintons yet don't wish any harm nor would I use epithets to describe either of them. I woule describe them in politcal terms beacuase they are political people.

meaning what exactly? should not a similar suggestion be made to the liberals within this thread? Just wondering.
