I absolutely love my gmail account. I did have trouble on an old account though but it was from registering it with limewire. After that I would get spam every 2-3 minutes. NOT GOOD. So I canceled that one and then started a new one and have never had any problems with spam after it. Also the chat function is great! Came across one instance where I could not register with a gmail account but that was only because, I think, it was a registered microsoft website. THATS IT!

Re: Gmail or other e-mail services

Good stuff. Thanks for the great comments.

So, you can have more than one GMail address? I didn't get that from reading the web site. I like having several e-mail accounts. One for friends and business and a couple for everything else.

Anyway, I'm about to can my ISP, Bresnan, because they just fired the one person who has tried to help me with their very poor, way less than advertised speeds, service. Only "$50.00/month for high speed internet with speeds up to 8,000 kbps." Yeah, right. The very highest speed I've ever recorded has been around 4,500 kbps. For the last year, afternoon and evening speeds have been 200-800 kbps. The only person at Bresnan to try & help me and who didn't "blow smoke up my pant leg" gets fired. He's 60 years old and his wife just got out of the hospital. Great. Bottom dwellers

So, when I get organized, goodbye Bresnan cable TV and "slow speed internet" and I don't care if it costs me more for TV and Internet. I'll have to go to sat. for TV. There are lots of choices around here for internet.

Sorry. I just had to vent. It really makes me mad that very few of the cable internet customers in this town realize they're not getting what they're paying for.

Re: Gmail or other e-mail services

I have quite a few GMail accounts and I use GAFYD to manage my Little League site (GCal, GMail, etc. for all managers and league officials).

Integrated nicely with Google Calendar, Docs, Photos and Chat. I've downed at least a half-gallon of the Google Kool-Aid.

You can have as many accounts as you can figure out unique names for.

I have a couple of GMail accounts for "real" personal email, a couple of Yahoo email accounts for "sign up for this free offer" kind of stuff, and a Hotmail account I use for all my cigar buying.

If you use Outlook, MS has an addin that lets you get both your GMail and Hotmail messages through Outlook.

You don't need "invites" anymore. I did get a spam email one time but I never saw it. Gmail just told me that I had one that they deleted.

Re: Gmail or other e-mail services

I forward probably a hundred very well known (to spambots) email addresses to my gmail account and it junks them very well, and I've never had a false positive.

For an example of the spam catching ratio, so far today gmail sent 149 mails to the spam dumpster while only 3 made it to the inbox. About 50:1, not bad.

better than any other spam solution I've found yet, and it's free

Re: Gmail or other e-mail services

Well, I signed up for G-mail. I'm going to give it a test drive. It's going to be hard to leave Thunderbird as that's what I'm used to. I have a lot of sub files in TB so I can keep different stuff sorted. I'm sure gmail has a similar provision.

Thanks for all the advice fellow gorillas.

Re: Gmail or other e-mail services

If your GMail has IMAP capabilities, enable them (under settings) and follow the directions for accessing your GMail from T-Bird. That's what I do and IMAP keeps it all in sync. I run T-Bird from a little USB drive at work, so no problems accessing personal email from public terminals. GMail labels appear as folders in T-Bird and you can move emails around at will and it will label them appropriately.

Gotta love it!
