Re: Any straight shavers here?

I used to use a Mach III for my head and face, now i use a Schick Quatro... it leaves alot less irritation on my dome. I'd love to have my head straight shaved 1 day, i just haven't had the time or occasion.

Re: Any straight shavers here?

I always wanted to but never found a straight razor that worked well for me. Occasionally at the barber shop I get a shave with my haircut and that is nice.

Re: Any straight shavers here?

Gotta' go with a straight razor. It's actually one of the few real traditions my family has - start learning with cheapo store brand safety blades, but for your 20th birthday you get a straight. Been two years now, and I doubt I'll be going back to safety razors on any sort of regular basis.

I'll admit I rarely take the time to do the whole brush and real cream thing, usually it's just Barbasol out of one of these. However, on the weekends when I'm not rushed I love the sort of zen feeling of taking my time with my morning routine. Granted, I also always keep a Gillette Sensor with fresh blades around for those times that I wake up late!

I have always wanted to get one of those shaves. Maybe if I can find a big breasted blond to do it for me.

Re: Any straight shavers here?

Better not let my dad see this thread, he's crazy about shaving razors. I haven't counted his collection, but it wouldn't surprise me to find it reaches into the triple digits. I've never tried it myself, no need really. There is never much to shave

Dovo makes a fine straight. 5/8 is usually good to begin with. Hell, many times I still pull out one of my 5/8's to scrape the fur off my face with.

Glad to see some straight shavers on here. It is a wonderful tradition.

Re: Any straight shavers here?

I've been cleaning up some in preparation for our move, and came across an old straight razor that might have belonged to a grandfather, or great grand father, wondering if anyone would be able to provide any information on it.

The handle is inscribed with an eagle holding a banner that reads "The IXL razor".

On the stem of the blade reads "George Wostennolm & Sons - celebrated IXL razor - Washington Works - Sheffield"

I don't see any dates or any other marks on it.

It's likely a late 1800's razor with horn scales (handles).

These are well regarded when they're found in good condition, and can be candidates for regrinding as well since they originally have a pretty beefy blade profile. I have a number of older heavy blade Sheffield razors and they're nice shavers with a good balance in the hand and an ability to mow through tough chin whiskers easier than some others.

Is there any staining/corrosion on the blade, or damage to the scales?

Re: Any straight shavers here?

I've been meaning to pick up a DE razor for a while now since I hate my mach 3 and cartridges are too expensive. Most DE razors are rather expensive though =/
