New Nikon D40 Camera, Any Nikon Users Here?

Shutterheads, I posted this on the Nikon Vs Canon thread, but most of that thread is geared toward the Canon folks, so I thought I'd make a new thread for the Nikon folks. Are there any Nikon users here? If so, did I get a good deal? If not, let me know while I can still return this stuff! I just bought a Nikon D40 and purchased a Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm VR lens to go along with the standard 18-55mm lens. I payed $700 for the camera, the lenses, a 4GB card, a USB card reader, a bag, a tabletop tripod, a UV filter, and some other random stuff. I'm pretty stoked, my sister has one, and I borrowed hers while I was in Korea and it took some great pictures. I think I got a good deal on it, and the camera gets great reviews. As of right now, I'm really happy with it, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Here's a link to Rockwell's review, happy shooting all! http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

I used to stand tall for Canon, but I think that now the game is digital, Canon have fallen behind.

I often borrow my dads camera's, as he has more than enough that I can nick one for a few weeks here and there. I've been using his Nikon D80 (got a whole load of lenses for that thing) and think its brilliant. Colours aren't quite up to those of a Fuji S3 (IMO of course), but they are very good, can't really fault it at all.

If the D40 is simply a scaled down version of the 80, then it will be a brilliant camera.

I think you got a pretty good deal. That's the one I was looking at buying when it was introduced. A couple of months into production they had supply problems with the 6 megapixel CMOS so they introduced theD40x with 10 megapixels to keep up with the demand. I'm on the fence as to which to go with. Since I already have Nikon glass I'm going to go with one of the two myself.

Congrats on the new camera! You really can't go wrong with any Nikon.

Thanks man, I sat the fence on the two as well. Read that review that Rockwell did on the D40, that's what convinced me to go with the D40 over the D40X or even the D80. Also, using my sister's in Korea was a lot of fun as well. If I ever outgrow this camera, I'll just bump up to the D200 for more serious stuff, but I doubt I'll ever need to do that. I'm just an amateur looking to take nicer quality photos, you know?

Way to go man - Nikon rocks. I currently shoot a D200 and an older film camera the F100. I used to own the D2H which is a huge camera, but built like a tank as is the D200.

Sounds like you got a good deal. Enjoy

Here is a list of gear I have -

Nikon D200
Nikon F100
180 2.8 AF EDIF
105 1.8 MF AIS
35-70 2.8 AF
24 2.8 AF
50 1.8 AF
SB-800

Not bad. Amazon would have been $636 shipped for the camera and lenses but none of the extras.

Sounds like a great deal. I find the D40 a little small for my hands, but if it works for you, it's a great piece of hardware. Make sure you post a few pics once you shoot some.

I love Nikon... I have been shooting the D50 for years now and I don't think I will ever buy from a different mfg.
