Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

There's a lot of Japanese in Japan.

Unless they change the smoking lay recently, most restaurants in Japan has a small section for non smokers. Yes, even McDonalds.

if you want some other laws: In the uk it is unlikely you'll be arrested if you're caught smoking cannabis, but more likely given a warning ( as long as it's for personal use)

and we can't smoke indoors at pubs or restaurants

I don't know where in Europe you have visited, but thats not my experience. I live in England and almost everywhere serves soft drinks (we call them soft drinks and never soda here) and all soft drinks that I can think of are served cold.

Last time I was in Germany to visit relatives, I asked for ice and they tried to give me some form of ice cream. When I explained that I wanted some frozen water, they gave this strange look. They then explained that they do not drink tap water, let alone freeze it. If I wanted water, they would be happy to serve me bottled water (with lemon, carbonated mostly). I found it easier to get ice (the frozen water kind) if I went out to eat.
