Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

To all my fellow Gorillas located around the world.
My Daughter is doing a project (actually she is helping her boyfriend with his school project) on life outside the United States. Pretty much day to day things that may vary from day to day in the US. I am thinking that there are not many variances BUT I said that I had access to a worldwide forum so here I am.

Anything in the normal day to day living that you know or you may think is different than what is done in the US.

Any and all replies would be greatly appreciated.
You can PM me or post here if you would like.

thanks again

Re: Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

ICE! Europeans do not drink their soda, water, etc. cold and most places I've been don't have ice. That was the biggest difference I found in day to day life when I was over seas. Seems stupid, but it drove me insane.

Also, just living over seas is a lot different. It's not all that uncommon for a family (parents and kids and possible even grandparents) to live in an apartment. This is very common. Not that many people are fortunate/wealthy enough to have a house. Most people do not drive as often as over here as well. Many people walk and public transportation (buses, subway, etc.) is used much more.

Hope some of this helps.

Re: Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

This IS the stuff I was looking for. Thanks. Hopefully more roll in. I have never been outside the USA and am not familiar with any other "ways"

I read somewhere that, in Ireland, peasants sometimes sell their newborns to be consumed as a delicacy by those in the upper class.

Re: Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

Each country is a little different, so just saying "outside the USA" doesn't really mean a lot. There are much larger variations between eastern/western nations, old/new/third world nations, or even rural/urban living within the USA.

Some common things you see are (depending on region/country):

Bargaining/negotiating prices for everything.
Shutting down all bussiness in the afternoon and reopening in the evening.
Ethnic division/separation.
People driving on the wrong side of the road.
Wide spread poverty.

I go to Peru a lot, and 1 thing I notice is the open air markets there. You can buy anything for meals or the house. It's a lot of bartering for price also. In my inlaws house there is only running water for 8 hours per day. So they "gather" water in buckets to last for the day. Also in Peru most of the women that are mothers stay at home to take care of the children and the house. If you would like more information or pics send me a PM and we will make it happen.

Well, gee whiz! How do your own experiences in Kuala Lampur differ from life in the States? Wait - if you're in Kuala Lampur, how do you know what life in the U.S. is like in order to make a comparison?

Topic is too broad to produce a coherent report. Pick a single country and go from there.

Re: Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

Here's a few for thought:

The Netherlands government doesn't prosecute drug smugglers with less than three kilos of cocaine!

The country of Nauru's economy is almost entirely based on bird droppings.

The country of India produces more movies than any other country.

Nearly 1/3 of Taiwanese funerals have hired strippers!

Most Middle Eastern countries recognize the following Islamic law: "After having sexual relations with a lamb, it is a mortal sin to eat its flesh."

In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death.

In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is forbidden from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror.

Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers; the sex organs of the deceased must be covered with brick or piece of wood at all times.

The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation.

There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time. Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry. (Now let's just think for a minute... is there any job anywhere else in the world that even comes close to this?)

In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands. (The husband's lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired.)

Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England - but only in tropical fish stores. (Of course!!)

In Cali, Columbia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens her mother must be in the room to witness the act.

Santa Cruz, Bolivia it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time. (...presume this was a big enough problem that they had to pass this law?)

Hey Zach... here you go, it's legal over there, you just can't dine on your date...

Re: Need info on "normal" life outside of the USA

The idea is the differences in any other country.
I understand that different countries may do things differently.
The report would be coherent pointing out differences in each individual country.

Not a broad statement but "based on the information gathered" what is done differently here and what is done differently there. Does that make any sence?

In Ireland they each children (Thanks Drifty )
In Europe they can smoke indoors.
In Peru they do this....
In Spain they have Siesta.....

I believe that this is the way she is taking for the project.

Thanks to everyone for the information (and look at you FlyerFanX...Mr. International, that was YOU with the 3 keys in the Netherlands).
