So, I got to get a root canal...

this morning. This will be my first one, but I heard it's not much different than getting a filling. This tooth has been bothering me for over 4 years now, and now, that it is like 90% filling anyways, the pain is unbearable when drinking anything cold. Anyways, how is this going to affect my smoking? Will I still be good to smoke tonight, or should I wait a day or 2?

That would depend on you really. I have seen some people that walk out of the dentist's office with no pain at all after a root canal but me personally I whine like a 12 yr old girl every time I have to go to the dentist so I would wait....

Either way good luck...hell I am terrified of the words root canal much less getting one done.

I would probable;e smoke but thats me. Smoke is not good for wounds in the mouth but with a root canal the shots are the wounds. Make sure the Novocaine has worn off so you can feel if you put the burning end in your mouth by mistake.

As for smoking there should be no problem. I have had 2 done and both times, back in the day, I pretty much lit up a cig on the drive home.

Of course it all depends on how your procedure goes as to whether or not you will feel up to a smoke.

yeah, tell me about it! My wife said they gave her Percocet after her last root canal...which didn't make any sense unless she had super bad pain...shoot, I'm on the Tramadol anyways, so hopefully they don't try to mix and match me meds!

I hate to make you worry but I had one root canal so far in my 32 years on this planet and it was brutal. Nothing like the Endodontist jamming files in your tooth and feeling sharp pain no matter how much novacaine (sp?) he gave me. Tooth still hurts to this day a year after a root canal. I thought the root canal was supposed to completely kill the nerve. Maybe my guy was a quack. Either way, I will never look forward to getting one.

I have had 6 root canals after a car accident and I had no problems. I had more pain from cavities filled and having to keep my mouth opened while the uv light dried the fillings.

Then again I have stitched my self up so my pain threshold may be different than mosts. Plus when I was younger I had to walk to the TV to change channels so I think that made me stronger.

Just hope for your sake that you don't get a Navy denist. J/K, had a couple and the pain was pretty intense for about a day. Motrin took care of the pain. I had no problem smoking after the procedures.

I can do you one better, I had to walk to the TV to change channels to put on what my father wanted to watch. Which almost always entailed golf. Now you know golf is painful to watch as a kid when all you wanna see is cartoons.

Hey man - every root canal situation is a little different, so listen to what your dentist tells you are acceptable things you can do/eat, and then make a judgement based on how your feel afterwards. No hard/fast rules about smoking when you've got fresh dental work. Caution would say chill for a day, but YMMV...

I can go even one better. When I was little, tv was black and white only. Even worse, after midnight and before 6 am all you got was a test pattern. We also had to suffer by only getting those channels broadcast over the air. No cable or vcrs. Also had to walk 10 miles up hill to and from school in a blizzard.

Hah! I had to change the TV channel AND had to hold the damn antennae with tin foil wrapped around me. To this day I shed a tear everytime I make a baked potato.
