Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionados

I have owned:
Sig Sauer 226 9mm
Sig Sauer 239 .40Cal
Glock 21 .45
Glock 30 .45
Glock 19 9mm
Glock 26 9mm
Mossberg 590 /12 Guage Shotgun
Bushmaster .223 AR15/Assault Rifle

I now own just 2 guns (Kids come along and change things):
Glock 23 .40Cal which I carry on duty
S&W 642 .38 Special 5 shot revolver which I carry as a BUG (back up gun) and off duty.

That being said all have pro's and con's but I think the .40 Cal is ideal for a good defense round. A good resource forum if not mentioned is www.glocktalk.com and they have sections for all makes and calibers NOT JUST GLOCKS.... check it out and good luck.

Just do your research. Everyone can and will give you an opinion on what is better and why. I liked all my guns and and just made it a point to know their limitations. The best advice I can give you was stated above, do your research and rent a bunch of guns until you find what works for you

Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionados

Here is a great thought! You can get a Beretta 92/96 model in a 9 mm and from what someone else said you can get a conversion kit to allow it to shoot the 40 then you can also get the conversion kit for 22 and shoot all day. Here is what is in your advantage: You are still using the same frame and will always feel the same so the firearm will become one with you. You can shoot for hours/days with the 22lr conversion which will help you/wife to almost forget about recoil which also means if you get really comfortable with 1 and only 1 gun when you change out the calibers you should not flinch from the other recoils! You can also get the 22 conversions for many popular simiautos. Midway carries quite a few but here is the one for the Beretta 92:
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...campaign=10636

Which will by the way pay for itself in no time!

Here is one place to get the conversion from 9 to 40:

Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionados

I don't mean to threadjack but is there a good place online to find the rules and regs for getting your handgun permit for NYS? I go to school in one county and have a permanent address in another so I need to find out how things like that work.

thanks.

Depends on what you are looking for, It may be cheaper to buy from a local shop, private persons or wait for the show. If you buy online you will have to do a ffl transfer, some places charge you for the inititial xfr to a local ffl in your area then your local ffl dealer will hit you with their charge I have seen $25- $40 for xfr fees on the recieving end. Just my And I am curious, where do you have to get pre approval? And how long does your pre approval last?

Pre approval comes from the wife. I think the pre approval should last for a good while, but I don't want to wait until April for our next show just in case. The approved item is a Kimber Raptor. Went to the local shops and they love Kimber MSRP of 1295. No wiggle room at all. I tried cash price, even getting a kel tec (unapproved) to see if they would come down. All I got for that was both list prices. I think they can be had for a good bit less and the added transfer fee would still have me ahead of the game.

http://www.galleryofguns.com/

They will search "bids" from local shops for a particular gun. I've done it twice and it worked well both times.

www.gunsamerica.com is a good online classifieds. Just remember most dealers will charge a premium for the transfer if you don't buy from their stock.

As for the 9 vs .45 debate, I'd currently go with the 9. Big fan of .45 myself but the price to shoot it is almost double when buying winchester white box. And the best thing to do is practice so you can hit what you're shooting at. Hit with a 9 is better than a miss with a .45 anyday. Plus with modern bullet technology a good defensive round 9mm will do a pretty good job stopping someone anyhow. And that's from someone who owns 9 .45s.

Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionados

What do you want the gun for? self defence/carry? pure collecting? target practice?

The 45 will drop a man in his tracks, but it is hard for some people to handle due to it's recoil.

The 9 can be handled by everone, but lacks the stopping power neded for self defence.

Due to a prior job that I had, I now carry a 45 S&W Cheif special. Has the stopping power, very small frame that is easily consealed & easily drawn.

Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionado

Random thoughts:

Without going into the 45 vs 9mm debate whole hog, contrary to what some believe, a hit in the finger with a 45 will not knock someone over backwards and a BG shot with a 9mm, center mass will probably not say, "oh, that tickles" as he picks the bullets off his clothing. There are plenty of ballistic resources on the net. Here's one example: http://www.tacticalforums.com/cgi-bi...;f=78;t=000963

With modern bullet design, I think the differences between calibers have narrowed considerably. Buy what you can shoot well and practice and get training.

Kimbers: nice looking, most of them shoot OK, overpriced, not as good of warranty or warranty service as Springfield Armory, Smith & Wesson or Colt. For any gun one might be interested in, I think it's a good idea to spend time on the various forums of the guns people are interested in (for 1911s: http://www.1911forum.com/forums/index.php?& and http://forum.m1911.org/index.php? )

Generally has good prices and good service: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php

Worth a look (no experience with these folks.):

Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionados

I've got great service from Kimber on their warranty. A few years ago got a a new to me Classic Custom 1. Night sights went out.. Sent it back to them and in 7 days they were fixed and back to me. I do agree that they do call a few hiccups break in which can get annoying. Have an ultra carry that had some bobbles out of the box, but settled right in.

I spend too much time on 1911forum.com great site.

I have several friends who own more than one Kimber. Most of them perform well and those that had problems had the dealer deal with Kimber and were satisfied. My 5" SA Loaded has been 100% but I sent my LW Champion back to Springfield for repair (3 point jams & heavy trigger). Any gun can have problems. I like SA because they pay freight both ways and have a lifetime warranty, no matter if you're the orginal buyer or bought used.

From what I've been able to gather from spending a lot (not too much ) time on both 1911 groups, though, Kimber seems to have more "customer disatisfaction" than Springfield. Of course, most write to complain than write to praise whether it guns or cars or computers, etc.

I really like the "mechanics"/design of the 1911 let alone the good trigger and overall ergonomics. Browning was truly a genius.

Re: ATTN: Gun Aficionados

I am with you wyobob, 1911 is above all a wonderful shooter. Plus you get the fun of taking apart and putting back together history each time you clean it. None of the press down on one button and you have your 3 pieces out.

Thanks for the sites, I will check those from home this evening.

As for the 9 v 45 debate. 45 doesn't get smaller. Recoil out of a 1911 in 45 is definatley much less than a poly gun in the same caliber.
