Point and shoot camera help

Looking for a point and shoot camera under $200. This is for my wife. She will probably use it more for group pictures and such. Once in a while she likes to take scenery pictures. Would be great if it has a decent macro functionality.

Thanks for the help.

Canon SD800 IS is $220 at Amazon. A little over your budget, but it is a great camera!

Re: Point and shoot camera help

Having been a photographer, I favor Canon or Nikon, even on point and shoot.
Megapixels not a big thing if you don't intend to blow them up large so you can save big money on that.
Very hard for you to tell the difference in an 8x10 of a 5 MP camera v. that of a 10 MP. You would have to blow up a quarter of the 8x10 to an 8x10 itself and compare and still have a hard time.
Plenty to choose and all quite simple.
I bought my dad a Kodak one that is awesome for someone like him, elderly, who can't handle complicated stuff. Will try to get the model for you.

They are running the Fuji Finepix S700bk for around $199 or so all holiday season. It is a 7.1MP camera with some advanced features and a 10x optical zoom. I bought the wife one and she loves it.

Woot is a very reputable retailer, I use them often and was my first reaction when I saw this thread. Merry Christmas!

Panasonic is the king of digital P&S now. Quality glass, effective image stablization (across their entire line) and very good processing software.

The LZ7 is only $168.99 at BH. It's got 6x zoom and macro as well.

Great buy.

How's the LZ6 compare? It's $30 less at B&H.

Re: Point and shoot camera help

I believe that the LZ6 is the same camera, sharing the same innards. The only difference is a smaller and lower res monitor (2" vs. 2.5").

I think the $30 is worth the bigger/higher res screen.

My pops has the FX12 as a carry-around pocket cam. It's a nice little gadget, but not as much zoom as the LZ7. But, the upside is that it's a much more sleek looking camera, which Bonggoy's wife may appreciate.

btw, neither the LZ7 nor the FX12 will throw enough flash to capture large indoor group shots. Likewise, neither camera has wide angle (35mm or so, only). These are general, all-purpose cameras for casual photographers or for just sticking in your pocket.

I know about woot I was actually asking about the camera. I'm sorry I didn't worded my question properly.

My wife uses the Canon A570IS. $150 at Amazon right now. We looked at the SD800 and decided in favor of the slightly larger zoom on the 570. It's really not a bulky camera at all, fits fine in my jeans pocket, fits well in most of her purses. She also found the 570 to be a little more comfortable to hold.

You may also want to check out the A710IS. Looks to be the same size as the 570, with an even better optical zoom, and still within your price range.
