Guitars giving me the Blues

Yesterday I was smoking a cigar, enjoying the day and decided to pick up my guitar and play a little. As I was playing, I felt something on the back of the guitar, when I turned it over there were two eight inch cracks running along the grain, all the way through the wood.... UGHHHHH!!! Help! The King B meet a sudden death, I couldnt quite enjoy the stogie at that point.

This was my newest guitar (5mos old), a Epi Masterbuilt, solid mahagony all around. I've kept this guitar in its case, and used the humidifier that it came with, I cant believe it. It was never dropped or banged against anything, nothing... this guitar has been babied... it never leaves the house.

I ordered it from Sweetwater online, they ask for me to send it back to them, to see if its a manufacturing issue or not... If its a manufacturing flaw I hope they will replace it.... if they claim it's my fault, and I dont know what I'll do.

please keep your fingers crossed for me, I waited a long time for this guitar and cant afford another one...

Man, I'm sorry to hear about that. I bet it's a manufacturer defect or happened during shipping. Either way I hope that they replace it for you.

That has to be a manufacturing issue since these are built to at least take a little abuse after all. Only being 5 months old there is no reason they shoudn't at least replace it. Good Luck bro!

Thats sort of my feelings. I've had three other accoustics sitting in the same room for years, no problems.... and they've never seen a humidifier.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, I hoping because the guitar is so new, that they will replace it.

Keeping my fingers crossed for ya, but yeah it sounds like a defect to me. I dont keep any of mine humidified and have had many of them for years without a problem. Hope they replace it for ya.

Re: Guitars giving me the Blues

Wood makes a huge difference, man. I have a CG Conn that belonged to my step father that was never cared for even minimally... it's plywood (like a lot of the cheap, old guitars) and still has incredible action. I also have an Ovation that is plastic on the back and some kind of wood on the top (no clue about that one). Neither of those two guitars could care less about proper humidity...

If I did that with my Martin D76 or Breedlove, though, that would be a hugely different situation. If it's only been 5 months, though, and you have kept it humidified properly (meaning in it's case, with some sort of humidifier), then it probably is manufacturing.

There's really no reason to leave any acoustic guitar out on the stand when it's not being used. It should always be in the case (unless of course it's plywood or an Ovation ).

Good luck and keep us updated, man!

Wow man, that really stinks to hear about. Hope it get replaced for ya. I had an issue with my Alavarez when I first got it. I t twang'd really bad as it had not been humidified properly in storage. The neck got a little distorted. Seeing our interest in humidity...I had no problems bring it back. Neck snapped back into perfect alignment, I got lucky on this one.

Re: Guitars giving me the Blues

The Epi MB's have good warranties too, so even if Sweetwater doesn't handle it, Epi probably will. That's a bummer though!
