Engagement Ring
Alright so, I'm pretty sure that i have found the ring I am going to get my girlfriend, but I have a question that is going to majorly affect which ring I get. I know you can buy a engagement ring and band together in a set, and they fuse them together after you get maried (in some cases one ring with slide in between the other.) My question is this: Can they fuse any engagement ring and wedding band together?
The reason I ask is because the ring I found doesn't come in a set, but my girlfriend LOVES the rings that come in a set. I'll include a link to the 2 rings I'm looking at, the single one is the one I really want, and the set is my backup in case I don't get the answer I'm hopeing for. Single Ring Ring Set Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

![]() Engagement and wedding rings for women are big big deals. My ex-fiance went so far as having a jeweler friend of mine design the ring according to her plans. I figured to get along, go along, ![]() Very seriously though, I have heard more stories about trouble coming from women unhappy about their rings then you would believe. Get what she wants, save yourself some hassle. |

Re: Engagement Ring
My wife had her engagement ring and wedding band soldered together after the fact. You'd never even know it unless you took a close look inside the band.

Re: Engagement Ring
If she really wants a set, get her a set. But, the rings we got for my wife weren't a set, but kinda matched anyway... sooo, it's possible you could find two singletons that match.

Re: Engagement Ring
I could write for a very long time on this subject. I'll try to be short.
I bought a ring for my GF last year. I didn't tell her, I never asked what she wanted, I didn't ask her friends. In my mind, the ring is a representation of you and your commitment to her. Her accepting it is a symbol of her commitment to you. That said, I opted for a ring that had a matching band if I wanted it (I don't and asked her to forego it as well). She was blown away by my selection and it was a win. I do see the other perspective of the guys here that say, buy what she wants. Save a potential battle. Might I suggest you check out Blue Nile? They have rings similar to what you chose and are very reputable. You can choose a ring that has a band and add it later. Or ask her if she'd consider going sans band because that is your preference (it also allows you to get her a larger/higher quality stone because you don't have the added cost of the band. My only other suggestion is to go with platinum over white gold which can discolor over time. It costs more, but it's stronger and will not discolor. Congrats no matter how you end up going.

Re: Engagement Ring
There are a million different ring settings you can buy and consequently there are a million different bands you can get to go around them. You never hav to buy a set, you can always find something that will fit around whatever you chose. I know people who have their rings fused and some who never even fused them.
My advice, don't let her pick the ring, its no fun. Would you want to know what you were getting for your birthday present? I am assuming you have an idea of what she likes (plain or detailed band, solitaire or three stone, etc) from shopping with her, so go pick something out that she has never seen. I personally chose the diamonds loose and then picked out the band based on the three stone settings. Have a budget in mind from the beginning and find out what you can get for the price. About the metal, if she is a silver color metal girl, stay away from white gold, it turns yellow after time and platinum, it scratches very easy. Personally, I went with palladium, its fairly new in the jewelry realm but it is priced between white gold and platinum and is whiter/brighter and has more shine than platinum and doesn't scratch nearly as easy. ![]() Hope it helps, and best of luck to you and your future fiance.

Re: Engagement Ring
I guess just to answer your initial question, if the rings touch at some point, I would suppose they can be welded/fused. Just as an option, when I bought my wife's engagement ring, I got something that I liked as well as what I thought she would like. After she said "yes", we we to a custom jeweler and had a wedding band made the matched the ring. It let her have a lot of say in the final look of the ring, and still allowed for the suprise of the proposal.

Re: Engagement Ring
Buy your girlfriend a loose stone (better qualty for the same bucks) give it to her then let her select the mounting/set. You'll never regret it.

Re: Engagement Ring
Get her a Cubic Zerconia on a beer can tab and if she loves you, she will love it.
Seriously though, I am with Billhud. Find a high quality stone and give it to her, then go shopping for a setting that she will like. If that's not for you, make sure you get a setting that can be matched to a wedding ring easily. As for quality, since your looking for an round cut, I would say go no lower than VS2. I know it may be pricey, but most of the stuff you get at Zales and similar stores are no better than S1 if your lucky. The paticular ring you are looking at is I2, whick means you can see inclusions with the naked eye. Quality will guarantee you resale value when things don't work out. ![]() At 3/4 carat, for about $3500, you can get a VVS2 ideal (perfect round) cut with an E or F color. For $2000, you should be able to get a VS2 very good cut G-H color. Be sure it comes with a EGL or GIA cert. Then you can get it put into that $250 setting (the one in the single stone band you linked to). Reputable jewelers don't even carry I2 quality stones, but I would think you could get that stone for around $6-700. Good luck and congratulations. |

Re: Engagement Ring
Most jewelers will set a loose stone in a solitaire for presentation and give you the full credit for the solitaire back toward the final setting. That is what I did. She loves her ring almost as much as she loves our kids. I'm somewhere further down the totem pole for now, but I'm still loved. I think she likes me more than the dogs at least.
