Looks like my 2007 investments, when taken across the board performed, at ~+5.2%. Liked to have done better, but what the hey --- better than seeing red.

I think a lot of people were taking profits. You gotta sell on the upside and buy on the downside.

Re: The Unofficial Stocks, Funds, 401k, investment pool.

If I looked at my 401k every day it would drive me bonkers. I've gotten to the point where I only look at the bottom line quarterly statement.

I haven't bought a stock in quite a few months. I'm a value investor who likes to find fallen angels. I've been building up a cash position looking for good value since about November. I'm pretty heavy into commodities/hard metals. About half my cash goes into QRAAX (Oppenheimer Commodity Strategy). It's a load fund, but I get it at no-load. Not sure if there's a no-load equivalent. I also have a lot in GLD & SLV which is knocking my allocation out of whack. If you didn't have a position in SLV, I'd consider nibbling into it.

When MO spins off it's international tobacco business next month I'm going to give it a good hard look. I have a feeling institutions are going to be dumping it as quickly as they can, which will give it a sweet dividend yield. I've also thought about going into Japanese banks, but I haven't had the time to research any. Japan basically went thru the problems the US has 15 years ago, but they're getting beaten down now for no reason.

any other value investors?

CNBC is holding a Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge; don't believe it's too late.

American is a good fund family. I switched to etf's a year ago after reading only 20% of actively managed mutual funds outperform ETF's. Furthermore, ETF's are much, much cheaper. Also, I stasrted investing in Proshares using the 2 x's the inverse of the indexes to lock in my gains. Yes it caps your gains but guards agains a big downturn. Capital preservation.

LMAO nm I just realized how old this thread is.

American Funds is a good group, won't hit be gains with the others, but they protect very well against big losses. I'm moving my funds around as we speak. Our reps were in a month ago and two of their best performing funds weren't in our available pool, so I had to suggest they switch a few and they did.

I haven't inversted in ETF's as of yet, though watching a number of them. Seems you have to really watch the backend costs of them and I don't have all that down just yet. Maybe you can clarify some of that for me.

Re: The Unofficial Stocks, Funds, 401k, investment pool.

It would be sweet if someone had picked up Vale from the begining of this thread, because they've gained $10 since then. I wish I had moved more money that direction myself. Oh well! Mueller Water & Blockbuster are two others doing some good for me as well. I do have one company that has a product that makes coal burn clean and in the day of being green you'd thing it would be rockin', but this damn think is just tipping over.

Check them 401k's people, we need good cigars in our retirement.
