The Unofficial Stocks, Funds, 401k, investment pool.

Why not have a thread we people can talk about retirement plans, stocks, bonds, and overall investments. Which stocks are you watching, is one working for you or taking a dive? Which sectors do you like? Are you looking at the long term with certain stock investments?

My 401k is with American Funds. They have a very good track record and stay more conservitive then others. They won't hit big gains, but they cut losses as well when there is a drop in the market. And cutting the downside is what we want. Since I have a good amount in my 401k and my company contributes to this account, I may take my contributions to other funds.

My largest holdings are EUROPACIFIC GWTH and AMERICAN BALANCED . While these funds are good and American Funds has good investors I still fill restricted from many great mutual funds.

I do not have much invested into stocks right now, but looking to do better and more informative buys. At this moment I have ALLIED DEFENSE, Vale , BLOCKBUSTER and a couple others. I rent enough movies Blockbuster has the chance to triple.

There are a few I have been watching and they've started their rise. QUIDEL is one I went to piss and came back to see it climbing. Not sure if I'll just let it go or jump in. Two mutual funds I'm watching for future interest are VANGUARD HORIZON FUND GLOBAL, and CGM FOCUS FUND

I don't think there is much downside to sharing investments and ideas, as there is not enough people here to flood a stock and drop the prices, but the sharing of info just might help someone catch a great buy or dodge a hit. Also can help with straightening out a persons 401k.

I know there are a few people smarter than I, so please jump in.

Based on the replies it looks as if most of CS has their savings tied up in cigars.

I'm buying all the stocks I can right now. I don't think they will go much lower. I like some of the banks- Synovus (SNV) and Starbucks. Everyone I go to is crowded with customers.

I've been watching the movie rental industry for a while now, just cause it's changing so much. Blockbuster had a great thing with their online rentals (like Netflix), but their price hikes every few months is costing them customers. Personally, I'd get out of Blockbuster for one reason: Redbox. From what I've seen, people would much rather rent a movie for a night for $1 and return it anywhere than rent a movie for a week for $5. Redbox stock isn't public, but the day it is...I'm all in.

A buddy and I were talking about that very thing; Redbox. I got in cheap enough on Blockbuster, so I'm going to wait out the CEO getting his thumb out his butt and see what happens. They have the brand name to use, just having management problems I believe.

If you have the money BOEING should be a good way to go. I know UPS canceled their Airbus order. Research the problems Airbus is having and Boeing's situation. [I am not a stock or business guru, so research what you do.]

I agree, Redbox and DVDplay are going to grab a huge market share once people find out how great of an idea they are. Seriously, $1, new releases, no 'accounts'. Movies are late? $1 per day, no problem. They were also very smart hooking up with McDonalds, making them super easy to locate.

Im up almost 8% on verizon in the past few days. The sector has taken a beating in the past weeks, especially with the airwave auction and the price wars between the cell providers, but I think its created a great buying opportunity. Between their cell products and the triple threat they have in their FIOS service, I think theyre going to be a great company to have in the coming years. And they pay a consistent and respectable dividend too.

Google's price was so high because the market anticipated continued exponential growth. Since December, they havent shown it. Recession fears are cutting into advertising expenditures as well as consumers looking into advertisements.

On top of that, there is the possibility that GOOG will have to pay out a ton of money if they win the airwave auction I mentioned earlier. (Long term...this would be awesome for google, in my opinion)

Then of course there is the Yahoo/Microsoft merger talk, which, if it took place, COULD further cut into google's revenue, and at the very least would cause a scare causing another sell off. (i really dont think they pose a threat to google though).

The good news, they're a great company. They are diversifying more and more every day, yet following their business plan. In the short term, the diversification can be scary and can be painful to watch, but long term I think they'll end up just fine.

I like the idea very much!
Nothing like having a smoke and talking investing!

BTW : I have the are Vanguard Horizon fund. Very happy with it, and of course those low Vanguard expenses.

You also might want to look into the Baron funds, very good stock pickers. Check their web site for the annual get together (if you like Billy Joel, Cher, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, the Beach Boys, etc.)

I agree with all that you said. OTOH, Google needs to drop it's space program or whatever it is. Also, stop the philanthropic unnecessary spending.

Kind of funny, I thought about starting the thread and someone had posted another about their 401k, so seems like there could be a need/use/want for it. Vanguard has earned a nice rep and not having your investment nickeled and dimed is very appealing. Definitely a great group to go with.

I'm really liking Vale (RIO), unfortunately for me it is in my son's portfolio. If I get a little more extra I may have to put it in mine. He has the most money and stocks.

WOW! Anyone has a good explanation about today. 401k dropped 800+ and stock portfolio hit the negs. I was up 4 Wed though so it all rocks back and forth and being in for the long no need to worry about this.
