Re: Putting things in perspective

I love this post mainly because it really illustrates the SIZE we are dealing with here. It is incredibly difficult to put into words how big the universe is. It boggles my mind when people tell me they think there is no other intelligent life in the universe....how the hell could there NOT be.

I know this was not what the post was intended for but I couldn't help but thread jack it...

Looking at those pics, I just laugh that scientist actually believe people on Earth are destroying the universe because we are trying to look into the darkness of the universe to find something new.

We have over 1500 or so eliptical and spiral galaxies within this space called a Universe, and one would have to think there is life out there somewhere. Thanks for putting things in perspective for us mikey23...

Just to put credit where credit is due, or rather take credit from where it's not due(me), my mom sent this to me in an email. I'm not sure who put it together but it wasn't me. I just thought it'd be beneficial here

Talking Re: Putting things in perspective

that's great information and a nice use of the many meanings on the word "perspective".

i really don't think some alien being gives a rats rosey ass about my problems... so, when i have a problem, it's a lot bigger than what Antares could ever possibly mean to me in size or outlook, at least, that's my perspective.

Re: Putting things in perspective

Light travels at 186,000 miles a second. So a light second is 186,000 miles. A light year is 5,865,696,000,000 miles. Taking this into account, if a star is 1 million light years away, the light from that star has traveled at the speed of light to reach us. It has taken the star's light 1 million years to get here, and the light we are seeing was created 1 million years ago.

Pretty cool

Re: Putting things in perspective

Truly mind boggling. Thanks for the nice post. It amazes me time and time again when I read about astronomy. The big problem is that when I start reading about it I hardly understand even half of it.
