I was thinking the same thing the other day. Whenver I see a movie I really like I'll buy it for the "collection.

I almost never watch them though, I'll sooner watch them when the play on cable or even network. Nothing like Scarface on regular television, love the censoring, just classic.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

Our DVD collection consists of two types:

1. movies we rented/saw in the theater and liked enough to own
2. concert videos.

It's great to load up the entire LoTR trilogy on a snowy winter weekend and watch it straight thru. Or put in Springsteen's Hammersmith Odeon concert and blast it through the surround sound.

Oh, and we own some kid movies. So, three types.

Well, and one or two of those "brown wrapper" discs. So, four types. But just four types.

And we don't even own that many, but we really like the ones we own. The wife's got her faves & I have mine, some of them even overlap.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I have asked that question of those who buy DVD's and I guess it's just something to collect is the answer I have receive. I do have a Star Wars compendium, Office Space, and a few classic martial arts flicks but that's it.

800 DVD's!!! Damn your cool! KASR and I are right up there with ya. But 40% of our DVD's are family or kiddo movies. Unfortunately TV is a great baby sitter for our kiddos!

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I buy DVDs for several reasons:
  • To enjoy on my home theater especially if there are great special effects or sounds.
  • If it’s part of a collector series (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, God Father, Sopranos, etc…).
  • I can watch them whenever I want – especially since I have an Ipod Touch now.
  • It’s cheaper than going to the movies.
  • It’s cheaper than renting because I always get hit with late fees.
  • It looks so dang cool to have a wall of DVDs next to all of my CDs.
Since the new HD formats were released, I stopped buying DVDs. Now it's time to build up my BR collection.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I only own 30 something dvds. I never buy them really, I get gifted them all the time. When I do buy them I usually watch it once then stick it on the shelf and forget about it. The exception being Rome, I love that show!

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

When VHS was new, 1980ish, I began a modest collection. I was overseas at the time and recorded a lot of what other people had to fill up on movies. The blank VHS tapes at the time were $17 and a movie was about $60. After we returned to the States, the wife was the only person to buy movies. Usually Disney classics and such.

Time moves on. I came across the box of VHS movies during our move two years back. I placed it all in the attic. The wife has replaced her favorite classics with DVDs for the Grandkids.

Now HD is out. It's a mean, vicious cycle. So, I'm more of the watch it "On Demand" now rather than buy.

At least with music I listen to it more often. Although I came across my copies of Jimi Hendrix "Are you experienced." on record, 8 track (didn't know I had any left) and cassette. I'll let the Grandkids figure out what to make of that old technolgy years in the future when they go through my stuff. In the meantime, It figures I have it on CD to. At least I ripped it to my IPod. What's next? Just another way to have the music industry fuss about my sharing an album, which I have purchased four times so far. Sigh.

Re: Why do we buy DVD's?

I also started a huge VHS collection and then DVD hit the scene. Since then I have replaced my VHS tapes completely. Most are burned dvds...it's the same thing we did in the VHS days expect for it's on a disc. Anyway, now we have Blu-Ray looking toward world dominance and I'm just not ready to take that leap.

I'm a geek and I can't wait for the day that we have access to every movie online as long as it plays smoothly and looks good. Hook the pc up to an external tv and everybody can enjoy it. Imagine what it would be like to have access to any movie you can think about without cluttering up space in your house and buying actual copies of movies. If done right it could be awesome
